I bought this ball specifically for the transition period when the oil has carried down the lanes. I found that by playing inside (between the third and fourth arrows) to keep it in plenty of oil, the ball will still get into a good roll and not over-react to bone dry back ends.

While I have not tried the ball on heavy oil conditions, my gut instinct is that it would work well as long as there is plenty of back end.

I have had good luck with the ball when I start out the set with a reactive ball, playing the track area, change to the Icon when the oil carries down, and either change back to the reactive ball or move inside with the Icon when the oil settles down (around the end of the second game).

I have had two of these since their release. Both 16lb 2oz, both pin out 4 inches, both 3 oz. top weight. I attended a seminar in Kansas City about this ball, and liked what I saw as far as what made it different than previous Columbia Particles. Me, with my higher rev rate, usually had a bit of trouble with high-load particle shells and early-burn. I punched the first one in a 4 1/2 inch label drill, pin 4 1/2 inches from axis, cg in grip center. The second was a 5 3/4 inch label drill, pin above bridge, and cg on grip centerline below grip center. The first ball gave decent length polished, with a smooth backend reaction. Sanded, it gave good read in the midlane, with the same backend reaction. The problem: not enough power at the pin deck. I wasn't getting good enough kick on the end to get the 10 out. I loved every other aspect, but the ball just didn't do it for me. The second ball was altogether different. It gave me better length, with an almost hook-set reaction. Grea

when i first got the icon, it did everything i expected. had everything that you could want - control, versatility and hook. have had the ball for a little over 2 months now and thrown over 600 games with it, seems nothing left in the ball, have to crank the shit outta the ball to get it to move, and when it does move there's no telling where it goes. right now i prefer my Track Assassin over the Icon. Assassin has been consistant since i got it which was 3 months before the Icon, have thrown about 500 games and have seen no change in the way the ball reacts. works extrememly well on all lane conditions.

This thing is stupid! if you can't hook the ball, the mothership has arrived for you! I love balls that hook. but this thing took the cake and ran to mars.. Where can i buy oil for the 40 centers in the northwest so I could use this darn thing.. The only thing I hate worse than a ball from Ebonite Is a ball that hooks like this. I like the fact that is continues, but at 30 feet regardless what condition is out HOOK HOOK HOOK HOOK and like the energizer bunny it keeps hookin and hooking and hooking... when I do get it to the pocket it usually strikes and it hits hard too. try one if your game needs help in the hooking department Corey

I needed a mellow ball that would not flare. I bowl on synthetic lanes that are stripped daily. Just way too much back-end for my liking. My Blue/Silver TI Messenger was just snapping off the back end. My MoRich's were way too much ball. I needed something mellow that would still hit. I drilled this ball, 16 lbs with a 1.5 oz block. Put the CG in the center of the grip and 1/2 inch to the positive. I put the pin horizontal from the CG and 3 inches to the negative. May sound silly, but it is close to my PAP, I crank (spin) the ball with alot of revs and keep the speed up. This ball turned out great. The only ball I have that I cannot swing alot, forces me to play direct, which is where the shot is in this league. Not very forgiving if I miss right, but thats not the balls fault. I drilled it that way.

Like I said before I did not like this ball at first, but with the Scotsh Brite and Black Majic, it works for me. Second arrow or move and go up the 3rd when they are dry .This ball will hold and the pins will explode . I do not leave many 10 pins any more either with this ball. There are even times when the 4 and 6 pins are tripping forward for me. I may have to try the new Icon 2 when it finally comes out. If you are having problems with the reaction, and not happy with this ball, try the Scotch Brite, with a polish, I like Black Majic<scrip

I love the ball. I miss left, It'll hang in the oil much longer than any other ball I've used. If you push it right, most of the time it finds it's way back into the pocket. Great ball, very smart. I suggest this ball to anyone. Also, on another good noe, I don't have to pull out my 10 pin ball near as much as I used to It carries well. This ball in combo with the Ebonite Warrior for drier conditions has raised my average from a 170 to a 190 in only one month. Nothing bad to say about this one (so far anyways)!

I drilled this ball 5 1/2 inchs out from my PAP. pin above my bridge. This ball flat out hooks. if you like playing straight up, dont get this ball, if u need something to swing right and cut left, icon is your ball. polish this piss out of this ball, anything less that 1000 grit and it rolls up too early on any house shot. dont put the pin right of your ring on this ball, better get some negative on it because this baby hooks. This icon, though may look fruity, opens up lanes with no struggle.<

I only rolled 3 games with it before I had my league on Friday. I had read the reviews and it is true what people say this ball hits the hardest I have ever seen. If you just barley touch the number one pin it will throw the pins everywhere. I even had a couple shots that I missed the headpin and it would clear all the pins. The first game on league night I threw my Eraser boost because I did not practice with the Icon except for the 3 games prior. I was leaving alot of solid 10 pins so I said what the heck and went to the locker to get the Icon. I started with a spare and strung six in a row just throwing the rack everywhere. I had people from the other team and on other lanes coming over asking about the ball saying that it was the hardest hitting they had seen. It did not hook alot for me with the out of the box finish but I am gonna spin it this week and looking fwd to throwing it asap. If you throw a big hook I would not recommend but I will post another review next week and let

I just purchase and got this ball drilled not long ago. This is a really great ball. I have tried and tested it for many times... it has shown great performance so far. 'New Muscle' core for its hight big bang performance. When release correctly it hits and bangs the pins really hard... with deep deep great impact. Though if it were to miss the pocket slightly... it will leave just one pin standing for most of the time. It is a very predictable and a powerful ball... easy to control. Highly reccomended for those who wants to buy a high performance ball... ICON shold be the one... Great job Columbia!!! =)

If someone that does not turn the ball at all, this ball would work fine. It didn't matter what kind of condition I was on, all it did was hook. If it is dry, forget about it. It is way too much ball for me to handle. I guess that it falls into one of those balls that make a 170 ave a 200 in no time at all. This stuff is not for me. The only thing that I can give credit to, is that if you scotch - brite it, it rolls alot cleaner, but watch out, cuz when it hits the dry...........It is going for a ride.

Great ball. My is drill for length and ark. This is a 16 pound ball. Bowling on Med. oil shot with strong backends. With drilling thr ball goes smooth thur the heads and arks in too the pocket with out rolling out. You will need dry backends for this drilling to work. Will work well on Med-Dry oil as well. Very easy to change coverstock if needed. Takes polish or sanding well. Right out of the bock I took scothbright to about 600 grit to take of the shine. This work well for me on my lanes. Did not hook as much as I thought it would even though I drilled it not to hook a hole lot. I will post another review after about 25 games.
