Dyno-Thane The Thing Bowling Ball

(23 reviews) Write a Review
Dyno-thane's flagship launch for 2003, THE THING, has reactions that are out of this world. Stronger backends and extra terrestrial pin carry make this a leading performer in the Dyno-thane armory of products. The THING is designed to handle medium to wet lanes by simply fine-tuning the Soake coverstock, and will "alienate" you from your opponents.

Given I have a Thing Returns that absolutely rips up the typical house shot, it was going to be tough for any ball to compete for my attention. I traded a buddy of mine for this ball and I wasn't overly impressed with this ball. It tends to burn up it's energy a little too quick (could be the drill) which makes it hard for me to carry the corner and 4 pin. This makes it more of a heavier oil ball, so I tried to use it on this condition and found myself leaving flat 10's and light mixer 7's, both of which my Thing Returns take out with ease. Even on flush hits I leave the occasional 9 pin and 10 pin. It just doesn't have the carry ability as my Thing Returns. Still it is a good ball and I would recommend it to any bowler on the THS. FYI: Go with a Thing Returns for the light - medium - med./oily conditions and then a Thing Lives (if you're a big Dyno fan) for the oilier shots!

I been wanting this ball for awhile. Never got the chance to get one until. Dyno-thane stopped by at the shop. He had some ones setting around. So took one. The pin was 2.5 inches the top weight was 3.54 oz. I put the pin next to my ring finger with theCG in the middle of my span. 2 things I like about this ball is I haven't experenced no over/under and the different parts of the lane I can play with this ball The Thing is the real thing. Very nice ball on differnt conditions.

Well I have nothing but greatness to say about this ball with 3 700's and 2 800's out of this ball in a 2 month range I plan to throw this ball for a long while and cant wait for the time that I get an extra Dyno-Thane to back up The Thing and recommend a Dyno-Thane for anyone looking for a new ball or just starting out in bowling I have found this ball to have one of the smoothest reaction and best control out of any brand bowling ball on the market. I am figuring to follow it up with The Thing Lives or The Thing Returns.

I bought this ball in April of 2004. Starting playing 15 out to about 8 board and wasn't reacting. I almost gave up on the ball. Then I played 12 out to 10 board and ball started reacting nice. Average 231 and 220 for my leagues in 2004 with a 298 game this year. Two problems, the ball does react nicely but when you have heavy oil at some point the ball will not break as good, but what doesn't do that. Also, the ball has a habit of not finishing probably, but for that to not happen I use a little wax on the ball and it works good. I would highly recemmend this ball for stroker bowlers

I bought this as a blem with a SEVEN inch pin. Now what can you do with that? Answer : make one heck of a consistant ball. The pin is out in the realms of space somewhere under the bottom of the ball :)) I have a longish length which was to be expected, but a strong move to the pins which was such a bonus. I can play almost anywhere on the lanes with this ball from between 3-4 right out to board 3. It is a truely wonderful piece of kit. I use it to read the lanes and usually end up using it for the first 5 or 6 games, not bad for a blem. Used in conjunction with the Thing Retuns its a potent double act. I now have in excess of 200 games on it and its as strong as ever. I will say I dont think it likes carry-down much but I dont see a lot of that only when away from my regular centre. All in all though it is a great ball and with good maintainance will last you may games unlike some on the market at the moment.

I like the ball becaus i can pick up any thing with it. I picked up most splits except the 7-10 but that is hard any way i can bowl on synthetic lanes and wood. I havent tried to do the Composite lanes but it will most likely work good. I am one of those bowlers that doesnt believe in using a spare ball and or switching balls in game and also wiping my ball off. I come from a family where my father uses a 12 year old blue hammer and my mom uses a blue wolf. My father can hook his hammer 10-15 boards in medium oil and now he is going to get the new big blue.

great ball...phenomenal carry...the blue and red looks amazing...i have mine drilled with a leverage drilling...works great on medium oiled lanes...is not made for extreme conditions...although i can go up the boards with mine on heavy oil...dynothane is an absolute winner in the bowling industry...works great on sport conditions...will recover well on conditions like these...this ball does not track out easily...and when it does, it still hooks like it does out of the box due to the amazing soaker coverstock...this ball is low-maintainance and still achieves desired results...everyone should get this thing...

This ball is strong. The hit is amazing, it carries a lot of the off hits when I am expecting a corner pin. I also like the versatility, its been a few years since I could score well all 3 games in league without having to switch balls. I was also able to use this ball in both leagues all Summer, 222 average on Mondays and 225 on Thursdays in two different houses. I am surprised at how little it has tracked out. I will post again at the end of my Winter leagues. I think I am going to get the new one since it is supposed to go a little longer.<s

Well let me first start off by saying this, I wasnt really in the market for a new ball, basically I purchased this ball b/c of its unique colors and maybe to use on my twice a month league. I got it drilled tonight and boy was I amazed. I currently use a storm xfactor, and am averaging 220 with it, and I thought that ball was amazing as well and still is, but "the thing" is the next best competition to the x factor, Though they are 2 different balls 1 is pearlized, and the thing is factory high gloss, both give good hit and carry. The thing is a little more versatile and aggressive in the back if u want more of an arc. The xfactor i have is more flippy on the back. The thing hits with TREMENDOUS power and blows the rack out. I had the ball for only 4 hours and already shot 300 with it. I am VERY impressed. Even on some shots I pulled, it held and hit like a BOMB! The thing came sailing back from outside the first arrow with myself standing on the extreme left side of the lane. AMAZI

When I first got the ball i couldn't wait to get it out the box and on the lanes. Not only does The Think look cool it has the reactions to back it up. First of all this is the first time I really had a ball fitted to my hand (I have tones of used balls that people give me). I was normally around a 165-170 bowler but now I am holding a 210 average in our league. All thanks to The Thing and a plastic ball for my 7's (lefty) I was not a very consistent bowler but the Thing is very forgiving where it hit hard or light pins are flying like crazy. I probably have about 200 games on it now and I have noticed some lighter hits leaving solid 5's on great lookin hits so maybe its coolin off but after a good cleaning it seems to be as good as new. I may not bowl in a huge league but the Thing led me to highest league average and highest league series at a nice 769. So for those of you that want a ball that I believe is guaranteed to improve your game get a thing. (I Gave it nine pins cu

This ball maker says the ball can soak up the oil and not be effected. That is BS. The ball soaked up the oil and changed dramatically. I was very disappointed. The thing is just that, a thing and not a good ball, unless you only bowl one game and put it away or clean it. Bowling balls are too expensive to get stuck with a dud like this one. Save your money and buy a ball that is not a "soaker". It is hard to write this review any longer as this ball was such a let down. By the time I was through bowling with this ball, it hit like a ripe tomatoe!

Great ball. The backend reaction is the best I have seen, excluding the Track Freak Out. The Thing has tremendous HIT. I do not get a skid flip reaction out of it. It is very readable, controllable and for most bowlers will be able to be used on almost any condition. Unless you throw the ball very slow, you are not going to be able to use this ball if the lanes are flooded. If you sand it down to 400-600 grit it may be possible, but that is just not what this ball was made for. Line up on med-med heavy with backends and watch the pins fly.<s

I sware I need to be doing whatever the rest of you guys are doing for money because I am a hard working american that loves to bowl but since when do some of you guys shell out for this ball + s&h + drilling which would probably put it in an excess of 200.00 that a ball is only going to work for you 1/3 of the time and thats only if they lay fresh oil out for you when you go to bowl. I need a ball that can consistently give me 18-25 good frames before the heads are burnt out. And the way this ball soaks up oil I find myself baking the ball in my oven every month because it just soaks up too much oil and loses a lot of drive through the pocket.

this really is not a bad ball you just have to be able to keep moving and play a little more inside because when they say the soaker cover stock they mean soaker cover stockbecause after one or two games you have to put it back in your bag at least i have to because i can move around ij just dont like to that is way i sold this ball and went back to throwing all my track stuff and i will throw track till i die all i got to do is pull out the old ASSASSIN that is all any body will need.

Accidently tripped on a good deal for this ball on the web. Couldn't refuse and made purchase. I have the REMEDY from Dyno-thane and thought I'd give this ball a try. To my delight this ball is GREAT! I almost gave up on it in the first game .. shot 147. I think I was expecting too much. Once I settled down and found the right line .. I was blowing the pins away. I average 195 .. in the 15 or so games with this ball (throwing the 147 game out) I've been shooting 210. The ball is drilled/layed out using the METHOD 1 layout suggested by Dyno-thane. I know others have used this phrase but .. I THINK THIS IS THE BEST BALL I'VE EVER HAD!

I think most manufacturers put out basically good quality equipment. Most balls are, in fact, 8 to 10s, with a few (and in my opinion very few) real dogs. But this one, well, it's something special. 4.5x4.5, pin under ring. 1. The polished pearl/solid cover gets through the heads and midlane in all medium, medium light, heavier and even spotty mediums. It will grab, but it has excellent, consistent length. 2. Upon reaching its breakpoint it makes a clear, angular arcing turn left. It seems unimpeded by carrydown and moves smoothly rather than in a flip. I have yet to see it rollout on medium lanes. 3. The Thing hooks strongly, consistently and continuously. No, it's not a super-hooker, but a strongish pearl ball. If you want a sense of how much it moves, it reminds me of the Hex and Freak Out, the Hex especially in the timing of the move. A strongish but long ball. 4. At the pins the Thing is very, very good. Carries lightish hits well, very good on solid hit

I used to be a storm admirer. However I decided to give this ball a try after my favourite pro-shop offered me this ball. So this is my first Dyno-Thane ball after all. My proshop drilled the ball to go longer in medium to dry lanes condition . After a few games, I found that I am able to control this ball nicely due to my medium speed and low revs. I really amazed of this ball's pin action. With this ball too I managed to keep a steady score between 180 and 200. Definately, this ball will be with be the major ball of my arsenal. Great ball from Dyno-Thane!!

Wow, The Thing is my first DT ball and im impressed for the hitting power and powerful backend. My 3 first games was : 245, 232, 284 i choose between Layout 2 and 3 I love the new coverstock . It is same cover than ELEMENT. i cant wait for next DT products. Maybe my next ball is ELEMENT for heavy oil - Sport Conditions Lanes or better ball Now DT is my choice , cz im convinced DT do better balls than others for me. i dislike Columbia Good Job to Phil Cardinale and DT. d d d d d d d d

I am interested of the ball before I have read the Technical Details. Length: 16 out of 20 & Backend: 20 out of 20 Flare Potential: Medium to High . That's why I thought the angle is very sharp & I wont even control it. No wonder the ball is like very even going, it bring the strong on the medium oil lane. For the light oil, I just need to swing out towards to the first arrow. Now I am using the 1" pin out, I think I need another 2.5 - 3"pin. Waiting for the new from Dyno-thane

I dare anyone to find a better ball. The Thing can't be beat! Drill it for length, drill it for hook, it's simply the best ball ever made. Although the ball specs lend this ball to being more of an medium to heavy oil choice, I picked it for drier conditions. Had it drilled to Dynothane's patttern #1. I can rev up the ball & get incredible reaction without over hooking. Or, I can roll it & pickup ten pins. I've never had a more versatile ball. I highly recommend this ball to anyone who wants to step up their game a notch or two

Drilled the ball right before league play. Played with the thumb while throwing shadow balls. First game 279 leaving a SOLID 9-pin. You'll have that with this ball due to it won't quit turning once it starts. 245 second game with a 8-pin and another 9-pin. Then an error by yours truly. Last game 221 not to bad for getting to know my THING. Dyna-Thane has definetly came to play, They have all the right stuff and it is seen every week on T.V. I have the pin right under the ring finger with the C.G. kick out to give me the reaction that I was looking for. I went for finger weight 5/8, and 5/8 positive side. This ball is a great choice and I can not wait until tonight to see how it rolls on wood lanes. I bet it will do just fine.

I thank Phill @dynothane for recommending this ball. I have been greatly impressed with this ball. This ball is drilled on the 2nd recommnded pattern with a 31/32 hole to remove the excess side weight. I have bowled with this ball on oil and dry and have been able to play it where there was oil in the heads. This ball has a nice midlane one then once it finds dry it makes a strong move to the pocket. It doesn't over react I have been able to play anywhere from the 25 board to up the 5 with just a change of hand postion and speed. I find this ball to be the the best I have ever owned. If you looking for a new ball give it a try.

This ball has been wonderful on flat and house shot conditions. It probably would not be the ball of choice on dry lanes, but it was not designed for that. The ball is super smooth in the front part of the lane, it transitions as consitantly as anything, but thats not all - the turn at the back is STRONG. Pin carry is super. This could absolutely be the first ball out of anybody's bag, and if the condition holds up the last ball. Overall an excellent ball, you will not be disappointed with this one. Another excellent Dynothane ball.<scrip
