Happy release (again) for the Storm Alpha Crux! This ball is an upgraded version of the original to handIe today's demanding heavy oil conditions. I tested this ball on a fresh 50 ft PBA Badger Pattern and this surpassed my expectations. Being a lower rev guy, this ball was able to pickup early and keep it's continuation. This is going to replace my 900 Global reality. Even when I missed it at the bottom, it was still able to recover and find energy to strike. Layout: 40 x 5 x 20 Core Name: Catalyst A.I. Core Core Type: Asymmetric Coverstock Name: GI-26 Solid Reactive Coverstock Type: Solid Reactive Finish: 2000-grit Abralon Fragrance: Apple Fritter I will also like to add that this ball takes surface changes well. 500 to 4000, it adapts well for sport shot conditions.

This is my first experience with the Alpha Crux, I never got to throw the original. I can understand the hype now. The versatility is unmatched. I went with a 5 x 3 x 5 layout to smooth it out even more down the lane, as I tend to bowl on a lot of friction, and also don't have a ton of tilt, so this helps me keep big cores from burning up and going forward too quickly. I tested it on our THS which is Kegel High Street V2, and anywhere from 12 to 25 the ball was absolute money. A little too much for right of the track, and a little too smooth from deep deep inside, but it gave me a LARGE window to work with and strike from. Higher rev players will love the smoothness of this ball down the lane, as well as the continuation. It's just that ball that everyone loves apparently. Compared to my 900 Global Vengeance, it is much earlier and smoother, where the Vengeance wants to pop a lot more down the lane.

I've been throwing the Storm Alpha Crux drilled 5 x 4 x 4, and I like it very much. The layout gives me a strong, smooth read in the midlane with a powerful but predictable backend motion. It handles heavier oil really well and continues through the pins with excellent hitting power. It's quickly become one of my favorite bowling balls because it gives me confidence on fresh conditions and carries consistently.

When I heard they were remaking the Alpha Crux now with the AI Core, I almost fell over. It is my second favorite ball right behind the Storm Lucid. The original Alpha Crux saved my butt at the USBC Open Championships when it was in Syracuse. I used it the entire event and just had to add a bit of surface for the minor events that year. This new Alpha Crux has a very similar motion as my original with the only difference being the harder it hits going through the pins. This has definitely earned a spot in my tournament bag.

If you never had the opportunity to throw the Alpha Crux roughly 10 years ago, you have a second chance. The Alpha Crux had been a staple in my bag back then and it will once again have a spot in my bag everywhere I go. This ball review should be really short because I should just tell you to go drill a couple of them, it’s that good. There’s been some improvements to the original version (upgraded coverstock along with A.I. technology), but after using the Alpha for a few weeks now, it’s just as good as it was 10 years ago. I’ve drilled one so far and used the same layout I had the most success with when the original was released. It’s mapped out as 5.5 x 5.5 x 2. This puts the pin above my bridge with a stacked CG and the mass bias just to the right of my thumb. It’s been so good on different surfaces, patterns, and angles. I can’t say enough about the new Alpha. It’s awesome, strikes a ton, and compliments the other balls extremely well. It’s a perfect ball to go to when your Concept, Ion Solid, or Vengeance Returns are done doing their jobs. The new Alpha Crux should be in everyone’s bag because of how good it was 10 years ago and now we have a second chance at using it! #StormNation

A legend is BACK! I did not have the original Alpha, so i'm just looking at this as a brand new ball (and with the tech updates, it pretty much is!). Compared to other solid asyms in the line, this cover feels relatively clean. This ball doesn't feel as diggy as the Ion Max, but it feels a little quicker than the Equinox Solid. Compared to the RST Hyperdrive, Alpha is maybe a pinch cleaner and quite a bit rounder, while the Hyperdrive stands up more and gets a bit more forward. Alpha Crux is kind of a goldilocks of early, smooth, and continuous in the context of our other options. It feels like it has a really big window in which I can use it. It's been pretty good in front of me and pretty good across the lane as well, which is something I liked a lot about the Ion Max. If you like a really versatile soldi asym at the top of the bag, this would be a great choice! I know it has a lot to live up to, but this one has made its way into my league bag pretty quick.

The ball reaction that the original Alpha Crux created is one that is constantly desired – strong enough to handle almost any oil condition, yet still maintaining a defined down-lane motion. Bringing this ball back with AI technology added is just a no-brainer, as that familiar reaction is welcomed back as soon as you throw the first ball. It does roll fairly early with it's out of the box finish, but that does not hinder the downlane continuation whatsoever (as long as there is enough head oil). This is my top-of-the-bag ball, with the Bionic being the go-to ball when the Alpha Crux AI starts to be too much.

  • Alpha Crux is Back and Better Than Ever

Posted by Darren Wong on Jun 20th 2026

The latest of the remakes from Storm Bowling is the Alpha Crux. The original was released 10 years ago in 2016. The new version of the Alpha Crux features an updated coverstock the GI-26 (Game Improvement 2026) to better handle modern oil patterns with higher volumes and thicker viscosity oils. It comes with a 2000 grit factory finish. The new Alpha Crux has the asymmetrical Catalyst core like the original, but Storm has added Amplified Inertia (A.I.) which lowers the RG a little. For the 15# ball, the RG is 2.48, the differential is medium at 0.053 and the PSA dif is 0.018. Another feature of the Catalyst A.I. core is the double cavity design which helps maintain the core’s intended RG after drilling, regardless of layout, since the holes should not hit the core. The strength of the cover and core puts this ball in the higher end of an arsenal along with other strong, solid asymmetrical in Storm brands line like Ion Max, Equinox Solid and RST Hyperdrive Solid. I would say the Alpha Crux is a smooth ball motion similar to the Ion Max, but just less overall hook. The strong core and low RG means the ball will not over skid. The cover does appear to be pretty tunable, so you can put surface on it for heavy oil and early in blocks and polish it if you want to use it later in blocks. I drilled mine 5 x 4 x 2. I threw it right out of the box for the first time on the PBA 46’ Regional pattern. The Alpha Crux was a little too smooth and rounded out of the gate, but switched to it in the middle of game 3 throwing a triple to bail out that game. I stuck with it through game 5 where I started with the front 6. By the end of game 5, it was starting to read too early and had to switch to something cleaner. On a house pattern, I found it to be smooth off the defined friction which really helps blend out a pattern. It’s definitely not overly responsive to dry so you won’t see that hockey stick shape. So if you are looking for a ball at the higher end of your arsenal that hooks a little less than the Ion Max but has similar shape and is more versatile, the Alpha Crux would be an ideal choice. In comparison, the RST Hyperdrive is the quickest and most responsive to the friction of the strong asyms. Then Equinox Solid is next and it is a little less responsive than the RST Hyperdrive, but still more responsive and quicker than the Alpha Crux. The Alpha Crux is the smoothest of those 3, and hooks less than the Ion Max with both the Ion Max and Alpha Crux very similar in shape.

As a one-handed bowler with a 14.5 mph ball speed and a 350 rev rate, I'm always looking for a ball that can handle heavier oil volumes while still providing the continuation needed to create consistent carry. Drilled 4x4x2, the Storm Crux AI delivers exactly what I want from a strong asymmetrical benchmark—early traction, excellent midlane control, and a powerful, continuous motion through the pins on medium to heavier volume conditions. The 4x4x2 layout complements the Crux AI exceptionally well for my game. The pin-to-PAP distance allows the core to rev up efficiently in the midlane, while the shorter pin buffer helps create a stronger and more defined move downlane. The result is a ball motion that reads the lane confidently without burning up energy too early, something that can be a challenge for medium-speed bowlers when using stronger asymmetrical equipment. What immediately stood out was the Crux AI's ability to blend out wet-dry conditions. Many high-performance asymmetrical balls can become overly sensitive to friction, but the Crux AI maintains a predictable shape while still creating plenty of continuation. It picks up in the midlane with authority, establishes a strong roll, and continues driving through the pin deck rather than losing energy as it approaches the pocket. Technically, the combination of the AI Core technology and the aggressive coverstock creates a motion that is strong yet controlled. The ball provides a clear read of the lane, making it easy to identify transition and make confident adjustments. For my matched speed and rev rate, it allows me to stay in the oil longer, control the breakpoint, and trust the ball to recover when I need to migrate deeper inside. The continuation through the pins has been outstanding. The Crux AI doesn't simply hook—it drives. Light mixers carry consistently, flat corners are minimized, and the ball powers through the 8-pin area with impressive energy retention. Even when I miss slightly into the oil, the ball has enough traction to recover, while shots sent toward friction remain stable and predictable. For medium-speed, medium-rev one-handed bowlers looking for a strong asymmetrical ball that offers excellent traction, superior midlane read, and relentless continuation, the Storm Crux AI is an outstanding choice. It provides the blend of control and power needed to attack heavier conditions while maintaining the versatility required for league and tournament play. The Crux AI gives me the confidence to stay aggressive, trust my ball motion, and create the entry angle necessary for consistent carry.

I was eager to see what the hype was all about. Mind you, I never rolled the original Alpha Crux, so I can’t compare the two. However, I can tell you that the new and improved Alpha Crux is a fantastic release designed to fit any straighter player’s game. The Alpha Crux has some wonderful features worth writing about. So, let’s take a closer look at what’s behind the new Alpha Crux. As a straighter player, I depend on consistent motion, a predictable turn off the pattern, and, most of all, enough power to deliver the hard-rolling continuation I need to compensate for my lack of rev rate. What I found with the Catalyst Weight block was exactly that! I loved how the Catalyst Core was smooth in the mid-lane while retaining a great deal of energy for the back end. Further, the Catalyst Core doesn’t hesitate when the Alpha Crux finds friction, so I loved being able to trust that it would stand up off the pattern with authority, regardless of how weak the shot was off my hand. And with the addition of the A.I. technology wrapped around the Catalyst Core, as a straighter player, I couldn’t ask for a harder-rolling continuation that actually left me with a few flying messengers! Yes, a straighter player with flying messengers! I would say that speaks volumes about how the Catalyst A.I. Core makes the Alpha Crux deliver! Let’s talk about the outstanding results of the GI-26 solid coverstock on the Alpha Crux. As a straighter player, I loved how the GI-26 solid is a well-balanced mixture that provides the traction I love to see, without the exhausting oil-absorbing bite that leaves me corner pins because it grips the lane so intensely! The GI-26 solid was designed for higher oil volumes, but it doesn’t burn up and get lazy like other strong solid mixtures tend to. On a fresh THS, the 2000-grit Abralon surface was ideal for a first game and produced a smooth, well-balanced motion I love to see. So, the GI-26 solid coverstock lives up to what Storm set out to do. However, as an experiment, I brought my Alpha Crux up to 400-grit Abralon to see how it would fare on a night of THS bowling. What I found was that the Alpha Crux was dynamite all night long. Because of the higher surface, I had to start further right, but because the GI-26 reads the lane so smoothly and evenly, I was able to move quite far in with the Alpha Crux and enjoy playing in areas late in game three that I don’t normally get to play. So, without a doubt, straighter players and those who are more speed-dominant THS bowlers will find the GI-26 to fit their game quite nicely. In closing, the new and improved Alpha Crux is an outstanding release from Storm. The combination of the Catalyst A.I. Core and the GI-26 coverstock makes the Alpha Crux a great choice for any straighter, low-rev player like me. Furthermore, I strongly suggest that advanced Junior bowlers, especially the girls, take a look at the Alpha Crux, as I can see it delivering consistent, predictable results for you on medium- to long-length patterns with higher oil volumes, especially when those huge asymmetric cores and heavy cover balls start burning out. So, stop into your local Storm VIP Pro Shop today and see where the Alpha Crux will fit into your arsenal. The Alpha Crux is well worth the consistency it brings! • NEW ALpha CRUX

Posted by Keith C on Jun 9th 2026

#15 Storm Alpha Crux: SPI says: A modernized version of Storm's legendary heavy-oil asymmetric benchmark with massive midlane traction and continuous motion. After drilling the Alpha Crux with a **4¼ x 3⅜ x 4** layout, I found it to be what I hoped a modern Crux would be, a strong, predictable asymmetric that blends the lane exceptionally well without feeling overly early sandwiched between my Ion Max and Equinox Solid. The New Alpha Crux is designed for today's higher-friction environments and heavier tournament conditions. Me:Senior Right-handed bowler with approximately 300 RPM and 15–15.5 mph ball speed, this layout gave me a strong midlane read while maintaining excellent continuation through the pins. The 3⅜-inch PSA-to-PAP distance helped the ball transition strongly in the midlane, while the 4-inch VAL angle kept the response smooth and controllable rather than jerky. What stood out immediately was how confidently the Alpha Crux handled oil. On fresh sport patterns and heavier house conditions, the ball picked up noticeably sooner than my Equinox Solid, yet it never felt lazy or quit downlane. Instead, it created a heavy rolling motion that kept driving through the 8 and 9 pins. For my rev rate and speed, the Alpha Crux excels when there is enough oil to keep it from reading too early. On flatter tournament patterns, especially 42–47 foot conditions, it gives me confidence because it reads the lane before the breakpoint and doesn't rely on friction to make its move. Compared to some my other SPI pieces with the same layouts: -Physix Blackout: Earlier, stronger, much more total hook -Equinox Solid: More traction and smoother backend -Ion Max Pearl: Less angular, stronger overall footprint and more control-oriented -Origin EX: Earlier and significantly stronger | The Alpha Crux feels like a true successor to the original Alpha Crux Looking forward to use at the USBC Open Champship. The Storm Alpha Crux makes its return and it’s bigger and better than ever! If you were a fan-favorite of the original, you’re going to love the new version. The Alpha Crux features an updated GI-26 solid cover stock, along with the returning Catalyst Core only this time, provided with AI technology. Better enhancement, better ball motion, better results! While I didn’t get the opportunity to throw the original Alpha Crux, I was very excited Storm Products decided to do a remake and updated version of it. The colors and Apple Fritter fragrance are amazing, just like the original. I decided to go with my standard layout of 70 x 5 3/8 x 40 for most asymmetrical solids I drilled. I have tested it both on a 42ft modified league pattern and Kegel’s rt 66 45ft. I was very impressed with the versatility the Alpha Crux can create. While the ball reads a little early in the oil, it has a very strong, continuous back-end motion through the pins. The more I moved my feet to the right to swing it, the more response the ball receives as it migrates through the oil. While league patterns can be tricky depending on how much oil your center uses, the Alpha Crux would be a reliable option to start with until the friction becomes too much, and the ball becomes very over/under. This ball will work well with sport patterns contested on heavier volume with more room for error. Applying power edge polish is also ideal if you want to give it a shot for medium/low volume patterns. All in all, the Alpha Crux would be a great piece to add to your arsenal. Storm has hit another home run with this release. If you are looking to add an updated asymmetrical solid in your bag, the Alpha Crux is the ball for you! • Alpha Crux - A.I.

Posted by Devon Radford on Jun 7th 2026

This is the most anticipated release for me so far because out of all all the Crux series, I have yet to have thrown an Alpha Crux. And now, they have brought it back, with the upgraded GI-26 (Game Improvement 2026) coverstock, same Catalyst core, and updated A.I. (Amplifed Inertia) core technology! I decided to get two Alpha Cruxes: Pin down layout - 4 3/4 x 4 1/8 x 4 1/4 (50 x 4 3/4 x 70, using the vector layout) Pin up layout - 4 3/4 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/4 (55 x 4 3/4 x 35, using the vector layout) All I have to say is wow! Both of these balls did absolutely amazing for me, especially on higher volumes of oil. The pin up Alpha was great for me to dig through the oil and store energy for me in the backend, which provide that smooth controllable shape that I always like. The pin down Alpha worked great for me after a little transition from the pin up Alpha to pick up just a little earlier in the midlane and gave me a rounder shape and continuous motion through the pins. With the pin down Alpha, I was able to keep my angles closer to the pocket, which suits my game great! Great for heavier volumes of oil, smooth and predictable and absolutely amazing on the lanes. I have fun throwing these, and I know you will too! It’s available now at your local Storm VIP pro shop.

The Storm Alpha Crux is hands down one of my favorite bowling balls I’ve ever thrown. From the moment it leaves my hand, I can trust it to read the lane and make a strong, confident move through the midlane without ever feeling unpredictable. What I love most is how effortlessly it handles heavier oil while still driving through the pins with incredible power. The continuation is outstanding, and when it sees friction, it makes a strong but controlled motion that gives me confidence on every shot. The iconic Catalyst core and strong solid cover create a ball motion that is both smooth and powerful, making it a true benchmark for heavy-oil performance. Many bowlers consider the Alpha Crux one of the most sought-after and legendary releases in Storm’s history, and after throwing it myself, I completely understand why. It has become a ball I never want to take out of my bag because it simply gives me the confidence to strike and attack tough conditions. The Alpha Crux isn't just a great bowling ball—it's a ball that I genuinely love every time I step onto the lanes with it.

The Alpha Crux AI brings back one of Storm’s most trusted names, now featuring the updated GI-26 Solid Coverstock wrapped around the proven Catalyst Weight Block and enhanced with AI Core Technology. With an RG of 2.48, Differential of 0.053, and PSA of 0.018, this ball is built to handle a wide range of lane conditions while maintaining the strong continuation Crux fans have always loved. I drilled mine 4.5 x 4.5 x 4.25 and have been extremely impressed with its versatility. The Alpha Crux AI is strong enough to be a great option on fresh, shorter heavy-volume patterns like those seen at USBC Nationals, yet it also shines once the lanes begin to transition and stronger pieces such as the Ion Max Solid or Ion Max Pearl start reading the lane too early. What stands out most is how predictable and powerful the motion is. It blends the pattern well, creates a strong mid-lane read, and continues through the pins with authority. Whether you're a speed-dominant player looking for more traction or a rev-dominant player needing control without sacrificing continuation, the Alpha Crux AI delivers. The Alpha Crux is back, and it's here to stay. Bowlers of all styles will appreciate the versatility, consistency, and proven power this ball brings to the lane.

Storm Alpha Crux 5x4x2. I never had the original Alpha Crux so I was pretty excited to throw this one. I have been very happy with the newer Storm asym solids because their core/cover combos have made them more continuous down lane while still reading early enough. I used to struggle a lot with energy retention throwing stronger covers in the past because of how rolly they are. Alpha has absolutely no trouble finding its way back to the pocket from just about everywhere without losing energy. It also responds well to release changes which is a good sign for me because I can see myself potentially staying in this ball longer especially on higher volumes. I look forward to throwing this Alpha Crux in some tournaments coming up. Make sure to visit your local Storm VIP Pro Shop to get yours now. #stormnation

Tilt 20. Rotation 50. Speed at release 17 Review: The Storm Alpha Crux Solid remake is a big hooking, strong ball. I drilled my first one with mass bias out toward my V.A.L. and the ball read early and was smooth. I did need to keep it in the oil for best ball motion. If I got the Alpha Crux to the dry to quick it read too soon and did not retain the energy or back end I wanted. I polished this ball up and had much better results. Learning from this, I drilled my second Alpha Crux with the pin in a high flare position and put the mass bias in my thumb. What a difference! This layout allowed me to swing the ball out and the ball never stopped hooking. This layout is one of my favorites because it raises the differential and helps back-end motion. The pin carry is excellent. The Alpha Crux is now the strongest ball in my bag. I am bowling a heavy oil sport shot tournament later this month and this ball will be in my bag for sure. If you are a tournament bowler or need help getting the extra hook potential this ball should be a good fit for you. Summary: The Alpha Crux is a big hooking ball. This ball is great on heavy oil and drives hard. The Alpha Crux is predictable and hits hard. The Catalyst core is back from the original but now with AI technology. This helps the hitting power increase while keeping the RG and differentials of 15-16lbs with similar specs. The core is combined with the new GI-26 coverstock which is an enhancement of the original GI-16 coverstock. Still designed for heavier oil environments, the Alpha Crux will roll the best in fresh oil conditions as well as high oil volumes. I was able to test this on a fresh 43ft typical house pattern. In this particular center, I try to play around 12 to 7 on the fresh to give me the most success. The Alpha Crux was too strong in this particular spot as it read pretty early and went high due to its strength. I moved in to about 15 to 7-9 and I got into the pocket with ease. As long as I got the ball a little more up the lane, it went through the pins very well. The smoothness of this ball makes shallow angles shine. If I got the ball to 5, it either saw the friction too early or was too lazy off of it leaving a flat 10 pin in most instances. As I moved in, I needed to create more rotation for the ball to come around the corner enough to strike. Like many other high-performance solids, this ball will have limitations opening up the lane in most environments. Bringing up the surface to 4000 grit or adding Power Edge will help the ball retain more energy for higher friction surfaces and lower volumes. Compared to the Equinox Solid, the Alpha Crux was overall stronger and was actually more continuous. The Alpha Crux struck where the Equinox Solid had a little trouble hooking enough. The Alpha Crux was about 3 and 2 stronger overall. I recommend this ball to someone who wants a high-end ball for higher oil volumes or who bowls on patterns who don't have as high of a rev rate and like to play straighter up the lane. I think it will be a great replacement for those who had the original or want a step up from the Equinox Solid. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/DIEfGMPd-bc
