Roto Grip Hustle X-Ray Bowling Ball

The Hustle X-Ray builds upon the history of great sanded Hustle line balls, but for me, this ball had a lot to live up to. The last sanded Hustle ball, the Hustle USA, may have been my personal favorite of any Hustle ball ever. This X-Ray is a bit smoother than the USA, simply to the coverstock being a solid instead of a Hybrid, but it still has the unmistakable great characteristics of a Hustle – clean through the fronts, more midlane than expected at this price point, and a hard-arcing backend. The X-Ray is best at home on medium patterns – the core does not have enough torque for true heavy oil, but the cover has too much traction for light oil. This ball is great on shorter oil sport shot patterns, though, as an alternative to urethane.

If you find your Optimum Idol to be a bit too strong but still want that same shape, the Hustle X-Ray is the perfect alternative. The Hustle X-Ray offers the same smooth, rounded shape with comparable hitting power. It makes an excellent transition ball across a block or a great choice to start your league or tournament, allowing you to play straighter while still achieving excellent entry angles. As I mentioned with the B/R/Y, while the X-Ray belongs to the HP1 series and is marketed as an entry-level ball, it performs exceptionally well for advanced bowlers. It provides a straighter look with superior carry angles, making it both highly controllable and predictable. The X-Ray also offers a lot of forgiveness—just check out the video where I was throwing it across various spots and still striking. The Hustle X-Ray from Roto Grip is a sleeper bowling ball that a lot of bowlers will probably look past it. The Hustle core has a medium Radius of Gyration and a lower differential, which I think is very useful in today’s bowling environment. The VTC coverstock provides control and versatility without being overly aggressive. I have had a great amount of success with the Hustle PBR, so I drilled the Hustle X-Ray with the same pin-up layout in hopes that the X-Ray would replace the discontinued Hustle PBR: 65 x 4 ½ x 35. I use this exact same layout on most of bowling balls with lower differential cores. The out-of-box surface on the Hustle X-Ray is quite dull and I found it to roll better and more consistent once the surface of the bowling ball “lane-shined” itself up a little bit. What I love about the X-Ray is that it stays on-line easily because of lower differential and slightly higher RG while the stronger coverstocks allows the ball to blend over/under lane conditions very well. In my eyes, a bowling ball like the Hustle X-Ray is a must in the arsenal of bowlers who are dealing with wet/dry lane conditions often. This bowling ball will be in my arsenal every time I am going to bowl on a “house” pattern or any pattern that could potentially “cliff”. I have found a good amount of success with the Hustle X-Ray while bowling on some shorter patterns as well where I needed a little more down-lane control. This ball also works great on longer, broken down patterns where you need to keep the bowling ball closer to the pocket. Do not look past this bowling ball!

High Diff Versatile Symmetrical Solid! Usually when see symmetrical solids with this combination they have a hard time turning the corner as you move left due to there not being enough core. This ball does not have this problem! You can start on the fresh playing straight and then as you move left the ball just wants to keeping hooking. Allowing you to stay in it longer! And then, even with my higher speed/low rev hand, the X-Ray had excellent biting traction in the mid-lane that wasn't overly aggressive or punchy! And I loved the smooth and clean roll the X-Ray had coming off the pattern shot after shot! And what I appreciated most was the VTC Solid's ability to blend the conditions all night! Whether fresh oil or burnt conditions, the VTC Solid coverstock makes the X-Ray one of the most consistent Hustle I have roiled yet! The only caveat I want to add, as I usually do, is that- surface is your friend, so don't be afraid to tweak the VTC Solid to fit where you need it most because the VTC Solid will deliver! The new Hustle X-Ray from Roto Grip is one of the newest additions to the HP1 line and it’s been impressive so far. The Hustle line has provided bowlers with all sorts of styles, rev rates, and skill levels and nice piece to use on medium-to-lighter oil conditions as well as compliments the current product line very nicely. I’ve drilled one X-Ray so far and really like it. I feel like the performance in this Hustle is better than advertised. It picks up in the oil like a lower RG, stronger symmetrical ball would, but it’s also super smooth when it sees friction. The one I drilled is mapped out as 4.5 x 4 x 2. This puts the pin above my ring finger with a slight shift of the CG. I left the surface alone (4000) and with a solid coverstock, the X-Ray has been a home run on older lane beds where I need a ball to not see the front of the lane like other pieces in the line. I’ve seen all types of players use the Hustle and have success because the X-Ray is very usable on several types of patterns and with the rev-rates getting higher and higher with the uptick of 2-handers, it’s a very controllable motion. If you need a ball for lighter oil conditions, older lane beds, or if you’re just starting to build your arsenal, I think the Hustle X-Ray should be the next ball you drill!

The entire HUSTLE series has been a proven winner as it provides the necessary stability and performance on lower oil volumes, broken down house shots, shorter sport patterns, and just about everything in between. Coming out of the box at 4000 abralon gives it a clean enough cover to make it through the front part of the lane (we bowl on much lower oil volumes in our area, part of the reason why I always have one in the bag) while still maintaining a very predictable motion off the breakpoint. For me, the Hustle XRAY closely resembles the USA, meaning that is pretty early and rolly for being an entry level at this price point. I find I am able to throw it on the fresh on older, drier lane surfaces, as well as during transition after the bigger asym and sym stuff like the XCell and Optimum Idol. I think this is a great piece for anyone looking for control, and not a whole lot of overall flare.

I drilled the new roto grip Huslte xray 4x4x2 using vls. Roto Grip has one of the most consistent, affordable and underrated lines in the bowling world! The VTC solid coverstock gives this ball a unique shape in the hustle line, while still having characteristics of a hustles we all love. The Hustle X-Ray is the latest Hustle to the HP1line. It uses the VTC solid reactive cover at 4000 grit. I used one of my favorite layouts 45x4x35 Out of the box this ball a little to clean with my loft so I hit it with a 2k pad to get it to give me better shape. The X-ray is a nice step down from my IQ solid and Idol. A great ball for someone of any skill level.

I drilled up my HUSTLE XRAY with my standard 4.5 x 4 x 2 layout that I use on lower diff balls. I have tweaked the surface at 1500 to 3000. The XRAY is a pleasant surprise. With the 1500 surface, the XRAY is just under my better sym balls like the OPTIMUM IDOL & PHAZE II. The XRAY is one that I can keep in front of me and still get good roll off the medium patterns when they get a little wet/dry. I can also ball up to the OPTIMUM or PHAZE II when I get pushed left or ball down to the TNT INFUZED when I need to open up the lane to the right. Roto Grip nailed another lower price/high functionality piece that will work for starters or high-end players.

What more can be said about the Hustle line that hasn't already been said? It is without a doubt the best "bang for your buck" in bowling. The VTC cover with the Hustle core has the 34th sanctioned 900 series under it's belt, along with countless other honor scores and accolades. The VTC Solid cover on the Hustle X-Ray provides the ultimate control of the lane from front to back, allowing the player to dictate what the ball does and where it does it. I drilled mine very strong with a 3.5x2x0 layout and it's as smooth and continuous as you could ever want out of a weaker core with a strong cover. It gets down the lane easier than my Hyped Solid, a good 5-7 longer before it starts making it's motion. It's a great benchmark type motion for light oil and drier house shots!

This ball typically finds its way into my league bag week in and week out due to less oil being put out during league play. With there being so much friction to the outside of most league patterns the Hustle X-Ray doesn’t over hook off the friction for me and has just enough when I miss into the oil in the middle of the lane thanks to its solid coverstock. Compared to the Hustle BRY my X-Ray gives me a better look in games 1 and 2 when there's a little more oil on the lanes, it also is a little smoother than the BRY which is why it comes out of the bag earlier. Players who are just getting into bowling will find this ball a has great performance for the price point and players who have bowled for years will love how it can fit into bottom of your arsenal on light to medium oil patterns.

The Hustle makes its return, this time with the X-Ray, which has the original Hustle core with the Symmetrical VTC Solid Coverstock. I drilled my pin up layout at 60 x 4.5 x 30 to give the ball more length and controllable backend. It does not disappoint! When it comes to bowling on high friction surfaces and shorter patterns, I try to level up from my IQ 78 and with the urethane carry down, I can open up my angles and receive more down lane carry. I find the Hustle XRay to work really well on short-medium conditions. This ball will definitely be a staple in my bag. The Hustle line was designed to be predictable with great performance and they do not disappoint. The New Hustle X-Ray is a cool looking ball and I have seen the colors vary quite a bit in the pours. My X-Ray is almost completely dark grey but I have seen some with a lot of light grey. They all look great and standout on the shelf. The X-Ray rolls smoother than my B-R-Y with the B-R-Y being a bit longer and more angular. I do like the 4000 finish on the X-Ray because it gets it to a predicable almost polished feel. I drilled the B-R-Y and X-Ray at the same time with the same layout and threw them at a few centers together. The total boards are close but the shapes are different. I would put this ball above my Surge and below my Tour Dynamix in total hook. This X-Ray has an eye catching new look and is a great choice for newer bowlers or the rev dominate bowler. The Hustle X-Ray features the same Hustle core, but this model comes wrapped in the VTC solid reactive coverstock finished at 4000 grit abralon. At 15 pounds the RG is medium at 2.53 and the differential is .030. The Hustle line continues to provide bowlers with excellent performance at the entry level price point. Don’t let the price tag fool you…this ball delivers a lot of bang for your buck! The X-Ray with it’s solid coverstock and finish, provides good length but the response time is on the slow side and the backend motion is an arc. All of this allows me to keep my angles closed while playing close to the friction. When compared to the Hustle BRY, the X-Ray is about 2 -3 boards right with my feet. This ball will be one of my go to balls on the lighter and shorter oil patterns.

The Hustle X-Ray is a very controllable symmetrical solid and has work great for me on some shorter patterns. I don’t normally keep these in my normal rotation due to where I bowl regularly but it will definitely be coming with me on some more challenging conditions.

The newest addition to Roto Grip's HP1 line is the Hustle XRAY! It features the proven Hustle core wrapped in the popular VTC Solid coverstock. I drilled up a fresh IQ Tour edition to compare it to, and I was not at all surprised to see the difference between the two balls. I drilled both balls 5x4x4.25 2LS and kept the OOB finish on both. To cut to the chase, the Hustle XRAY is much cleaner through the front part of the lane but provides much more board coverage compared to the IQ Tour. The IQ tour is earlier and smoother throughout and covers fewer boards from right to left. This is mostly due to core shape and design. If I had a new Hustle PBR, I put this right at about the same mark as the PBR. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a great bang-for-your-buck ball, the Hustle XRAY is going to be a solid option to go with!

I've always felt that Roto Grips HP1 line is the best in the industry for outperforming their price point and the new Hustle X-Ray continues that trend. The X-Ray features the same VTC Reactive cover featured on the Hustle RIP and the Hustle Core that has made this line what it is. The X-Ray features a different surface prep and a very cool new color scheme. The Hustle RIP has been my go to when I'm looking for a ball that will give me predictable continuous motion on lighter oil or broken down house patterns. If there has been a hole in the Hustle line it's been a ball that I feel like I can get into right away and stay with through the transition. The Hustle USA hooked plenty to handle oil but as you had to cover more boards it tended to flatten out down-lane and have trouble getting the corners out. The RIP was a little too clean for a fresh pattern. The X-Ray seems to fit perfectly in that gap. You obviously have to keep straighter angles and play closer to the friction to start but works great for that and retains energy down-lane a little better than the USA did. I tested the X-Ray on our high volume high ratio house pattern. The first week I took it out it looked great in practice but the other bowlers on the pair used some shinier stuff and they carried down so I transitioned into a stronger ball pretty quickly. The next week we caught a pair closer to the wall and it worked beautifully. It really gave me an advantage to be able to stay in the ball so long as everyone else fought the fast transition. I also added a bit of surface the next time I was closer to the middle of the house. At 2000 it was every bit as good on a little tighter pair. The core/cover combo is very versatile and takes well to both surface adjustments and release adjustments. I would recommend the X-Ray for rev-dominant and speed challenged bowlers and for anyone who is dealing with more hook in the upcoming summer months as I know many of us do. I think it will also be a very handy ball on sport conditions as it will allow you to stay closer to friction longer on flatter patterns.
