Ebonite Vortex Afterburner Bowling Ball

(17 reviews) Write a Review

The most versatile reactive ball on the market, the Vortex II, needed a companion. Something hot, on fire. Something to get through broken down heads and be able to kick it in down the lane. Shift into another gear. Well, turn on the Afterburner. Its Big Easy™ coverstock, pearlized and fortified with PET particles, allows the ball to be clean through the fronts. And, in conjunction with the medium RG, medium high flare domed R2 core, really haul some butt in the backends. Factory polished, this will be great for all styles when the lanes are medium to drier. Turn and burn.

I got a chance to through this at an Ebonite Demo day down in Windsor Bowl in Windsor,CA two years ago. Afterburner is my favorite ball. Ball is very clean through the front part of the lane and makes a strong, arcing move to the pocket. When the lanes start to dry up&hook early, I'm still able to get this ball through the fronts and have the smooth, strong reaction to the breakpoint. I was also able to play a little deeper and still get great reaction from this ball. I know where to throw the ball and can predict a strike when the ball leaves my hand.

Through this ball exclusively at the Leatherneck Classic (collegiate bowlers, the tournament in Moline) and averaged 208 on a fairly demanding Sport shot. Other than that, the ball was decent in league, but not a knockout by any means. Made a smooth transition from the heads to the backend. Reaction fairly similar to the Tour Boss Pearl, except not as pronounced of a turn on the backend. Overall it was a good ball while it lasted...not great, but not terible either. Not worth hunting down on Ebay or anything, but if you really want one, I've still got mine.

This ball is the only one that I need to use. I can play it on any type of condition. this ball is a very versitle ball. when the lanes are soaked, you can play straighter up with it and when the lanes are toasted, you can swing it. no matter where you play if u hit the pocket, you will hit hard. it is a shame that this ball is no longer made. defenately one of the better balls. i would recommend this ball to anyone and everyone. you can have this ball do anything that you want it to do.

HAD A DEMO DAYS AT THE CENTER I WORK AT. I SET UP 3 DIFFERENT SHOTS FOR THE BOWLERS. ONE OUR NORMAL HOUSE SHOT, ONE FLAT PATTERN OILED TO 28BUFFED TO 40, AND ONE BONE ASS DRY PATTERN. OF THE 6 I TRIED THIS WAS BY FAR MY FAVORITE. IT HOOKED MORE THAN I EXPECTED, BUT IT WAS A NICE SMOOTH REACTION. FED RIGHT DOWN THE LANE AND ROLLED UP REAL NICE INTO THE HOLE. HAD TO STAY SOFT ON THE FLAT SHOT BUT COULD TURN THE SPEED UP ON THE OTHER TWO. A GOOD ENERGY SAVER AND FOR AN EBONITE A DAMN GOOD BALL. BCUZ OF THIS BALL I HAVENT GIVEN UP ON THEM YET. OH AND THE VORTEX LINE DIDNT HAVE THE CHARACTERISTIC HOOK AND STOP IN THE BACK.

Out the box, shot a 259. Bowling for three years and this is the first Ebonite ball i hve ever purchased. it helped me bowl my highest game ever 289. Can be used on tournament conditions also. I havent used it much on sports conditions yet but i am still working on it. It is ashame that this ball has been discontinued because it really is a consistent ball until the lanes dry out. That's all, thnx, thnx, thx, thnx, thx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx, thnx

This is an excellent ball. The price is not too bad. It is worth every cent. It hooks very late down the lane, but give you a maximum turn allowing you to get the pocket most of the time. It gets excellent speed down the lane going for maximum pinfall. I haven't bowled a perfect game with it yet, but it's getting there. This ball is excellent. I love it. It hooks perfectly and makes sure that every frame is a closed frame. I would recommend it to beginner/intermediate bowlers that would like to learn how to perfect their hook. A great ball.<sc

It is an ok ball. It has got me some good seris but I have an old old Zone and that thing is more then burnt up, and it still hooks more then this. You have to be on very dry oil to have as much hook as it says it does. The ball is made for light oil it may say medium but it isnt. The ball has been preety good but the thing needs to not burn up so easily. It was a high price that I paid for it and if i knew what it would have got me then I would have never paid that much for that thing. It will probally go in the closet preaty soon. I was very disappointed on how much it says it has for back end then it burns up in like 30 games. It really sucked. If you are looking for a ball I would go with one that doesn't have medium oil because they lie.

i drilled my afterburner 12:00 pin above the ring finger - with a 6 1/2" axis - go give the ball good length- i have only rolled this ball on a house shot an it was a 2nd shift shot an it reacted very well... this ball carries great.. i had some pblms with the ball out of the box - so i dulled it to about 1500 an had great success with it. i did not get a chance to roll it in a tournament yet but when i do i will post another review on how this ball reacted

i love this ball, it seems to carry nicely thro the pins, does not take me long to adapt to oil on the lanes, have used it in all conditions and get still score consistantly sometimes it leaves a 5 or a 10 pin but no real bad splits, well not yet atleast. advice keep it good and clean for best results, quickly sucks in the oil and it will make a difference to its performance. my revs are not very high so i have trouble getting good backend, might try to change the surface when the time is right

I just got my second Afterburner drilled, High RG arc. It is clean through the fronts and makes it to the pocket with a nice smooth arc. Very easy to control. It also cut through a bad OB zone that no one else bowling could get through, it gave me an advantage because I was the only one that played that part of the lane. It has left a few more 10 pins than my other Afterburner but not many. It is a great ball for anything but dry lanes really. If you want power with control get the Afterburner drilled high rg arc.

Just a great ball for everything but dry conditions. I allready have two of them an I am thinking of getting another. I only have one drilled and it is drilled between high RG strong and Medium RG strong. I will be getting the other one drill drilled at High RG strong so I can play a little straiter than I do. If you are looking for a ball that will go long and snap hard and has a ton of carry and hits like a truck this is it. Buy as many as you can as fast as you can.

Drilled this ball Rev Leverage to get the most out of this ball I could.Very strong and predictable on the backends with good length through the heads. The carry is very good with this ball, but with all balls I think the way it is drilled means everything. For example:I have a Vortex II drilled axis leverage and that works great for that ball, but I do not believe axis leverage would work for the Afterburner.I believe you need to have some length on this ball and let work for you on the backend to get the most out of it.Axis would get started too early.Great complement to the Vortex II,but yet very different from it

Bought ball new for this year's leagues and tournaments. So far have increased my avg by 15 pins over last year. This ball makes a thunderous sound when you smash the pocket with it(which is often!!) Mine is drilled for length and max backend, pin is 2" right of ring finger, CG is slightly right of grip center. I have used it on anything from Heavy but not flooded to near Sahara Desert conditions. It will pass muster on all these conditions but it really shines right in the middle. A good skid to the breakpoint and a STRONG but controlled arc to the pocket. There is a need for me to go really deep on dry conditions to find some oil and that hampers it's dry lane performance for me(just not comfortable with the Robert Smith type line yet!! :-) Best shot for me is a ten board 17-7 swing and back. Still looking for that elusive 300 game, hopefully the Afterburner will get me there. :-)

This ball has a place in a lot of people's bags, just not anyone who really grabs the ball. The fast rev and stop action reminds off the zone line from brunswick. Definately a good ball for the straighter players, but anyone starting the ball inside of 20 and swinging it should stay away from this one. However the crankers may be able to put it to use on some of the more extreme wet dry conditions that you might run into. I am a little disappointed in it i was thinking it might be a Vortex II with more pop in it.

I got a chance to through this at an Ebonite Demo day down in Danielson, CT the other day. This was my favorite ball that I through that day. Got through the heads easy and had a nice arching backend to it. The drilling was stacked as were most of the test balls there. I played a down and in shot with this and had a nice move to the pocket and hit like a truck! I was also able to play a little deeper and still get great reaction from this ball. You may be tempted to go all night with this on but don't pull it out too soon.

Since getting this ball I've gainned a 'whole lot' of conferdence in my line. I know where to throw the ball and can predict a strike when the ball leaves my hand. Games bowled using this ball have exceeded my normal average by 10 points. I love the ball. I have yet to use it on heavy oil but my feelin is .. it is doable. I had no trouble in my league where they continue to feature WOOD lanes. The ball hits solid and the noise along is worth the price of the ball. I suggest you try it.

Well, I purchased the new Ebonite set and drilled this ball up for something to get longer than my Vortex II but still have controlled backend. This ball met the need very well. I have been able to use this ball in a variety of conditions, including the Team Usa Qualifier. This ball is very clean through the front part of the lane and makes a strong, arcing move to the pocket. When the lanes start to hook early, I am still able to get this ball through the fronts and have the smooth, strong reaction to the breakpoint. This ball has a very similiar look to the Super Power Pearl. I give the ball an 8, because I think that this ball will fit into most bowlers bag. They should have no problem using this ball in most league conditions. The bowlers with a lot of hand will be able to get some control, rather then the skid/flip of other balls on the market. If you have any questions, please email me at Bill@buddiesproshop.com Thanks Bill
