Meet Origin EX—the next chapter in the Origin series, built to conquer high-friction lanes with smooth control. Powered by the same revolutionary Ellipse A.I. Core, this ball pairs dual-procession core technology with a brand-new solid coverstock tested by our top in-house athletes. The result is one of our cleanest covers yet, engineered to clear the fronts with ease and deliver a smooth, predictable backend motion. And with its asymmetrical core, you’ll still get the punch off the breakpoint—without the sharp, unpredictable moves.

While the color combination may turn heads, it’s not just for looks. This precise color blend was selected through extensive performance testing and has proven to yield the best response when paired with the new RB 89 solid coverstock formula. It’s not about standing out—it’s about staying in the pocket. If you bowl in a high-friction environment or need something that won’t jump off your hand, Origin EX gives you that perfect balance of front-lane clearance and reliable continuation.

I am slightly speed dominant, rev challenged 220-250ish, low tilt and high rotation. The 900 Global Origin EX is a strong asymmetrical solid reactive with high flare potential. I drilled mine 40x 4.5 x 30. My axis point is 4 3/8 over 1 3/8 up. I love this ball for medium and high oil conditions. This ball gives me a strong, smooth, and predictable ball motion on fresh high friction lanes. This is the perfect league shot ball that I can start right with, with a little bit of added surface to it. The Origin EX is a STRONG asymmetric piece, which translates to early, smooth, and very rolly. I drilled mine 4.25 x 5 x 2.5 to give me a strong read in the middle part of the lane, and something that will never not see the breakpoint on fresh conditions. I will say I got exactly that. It reminds me a bit of the Dark Code from a few seasons ago, only more usable for me due to the cover being solid. For me, the Origin EX much prefers straighter angles. When I move left with it, there's a high probability of something left in the back row due to so much energy being expelled in the middle of the lane. This is not a bad thing when you're looking for control on fresh oil, or tougher patterns. It is easily the strongest ball in my bag, and is very receptive to hand position changes. When I do get around it on purpose, I'm able to strike from further inside, I just have to commit to what I'm doing at the bottom and not decide I'm going to just roll it forward at the last second and see what happens. If you need a ball for fresh conditions, over/under cliffs, or situations where control is the priority, this is an incredible choice.

The Origin EX is the latest addition to the small, but very thoughtful lineup at 900 Global. One item to note about the 900 Global brand is that they don’t produce as many balls per year compared to Storm or Roto Grip, but each ball has a specific intention and purpose behind it. The Origin EX fits that mold and I’ve been impressed with it so far. The Ellipse core remains the same like in the original Origin, but the coverstock is a bit different (Reactive Blend 89) which is designed to be extremely clean, but smooth. I’ll have to say, this is the smoothest asymmetrical ball I’ve ever drilled, hands down. Normally, we see asymmetrical balls either read the lane early and provide a slow response time down lane, or we see a really clean cover and a super quick response time, but the EX is different. The coverstock is super clean but the response time is pretty slow, which is nice because it’s different. I’ve drilled one so far and really like it. It’s mapped out as 5.5 x 5 x 2. This puts the pin above my middle finger and the CG just to the right of my thumb. I haven’t touched the surface and because the cover is so clean, it allows me to keep my angles tighter if I want to and the ball won’t get off line, or, I can move left and shape it without having a super quick response time. This ball can be used in so many places on so many patterns. It’s a staple in my bag moving forward. Go drill one!

  • Origin EX - a dull solid that goes long?

Posted by Rich Kollmeyer on Jun 13th 2025

The Origin EX is the solid version of the Origin hybrid that was released about 6 months earlier. Normally a solid will read the lanes a bit earlier than the hybrid version, especially when finished at 2000 like the Origin EX is. 900 Global has designed the ball to be good for higher friction lanes and smooth control. All I can say is that they nailed it! I was very skeptical that a ball with a 2000 grit finish wouldn’t hook at my toes, but it is absolutely a solid that gets down the lane and doesn’t snap like shiny equipment does. How they did it is beyond me, but I really believe this is going to be a great ball on sport shots that need control and even on overly clipped house shots that need to blend out the over/under. Layout: 5.5 x 5 x 3 The Origin Ex is a ball I can either start the night off with or switch to during transition. Don’t let the look of the cover fool you, this ball may look like it wants to hook out of the building, but gives you good motion through the fronts with a smooth backend motion. This has been the first ball out of the bag for me and when the lanes start to transition it can still be used as well when the lanes start to breakdown. For me I can get a little left and even when the ball gets to the dry, I still get the smooth overall backend motion down lane.

The solid counterpart to the hybrid Origin, the Origin EX can be used on fresh to medium type conditions. Cleaner than the stronger asym solids, such as X-Cell or Ion Max, the Origin EX will get past the front part of the lane much easier, preventing burnup and providing better continuation down lane. I have found success with the EX on fresh house conditions and on tougher conditions where this ball is more of a transition piece as the lane begins to develop and I begin to migrate left and open my angles up. This ball is still on the smoother and controllable side and can hit different gaps in one’s arsenal pending what their needs are.

I drilled the new 900 Global Origin EX 5x4x2 using VLS. This ball follows up the original origin but features a smoother cleaner solid coverstock. The marriage between the RB 89 solid cover and the elipse core gives you a smoother option for when the lanes are fresh, or transitioning. This ball fits in the 2 spot in a 6 ball arsenal for me. Allowing me to open my angles up on the fresh but still have that nice and smooth motion. I highly recommend picking one of these up!

Layout: 35 x 4 1/4” x 40 The Origin EX is one of the most interesting releases from SPI in quite some time – this is one of the few times when the description of the ball given by the company does not match my experience when using the ball. The original Origin is one of my favorite SPI bowling balls from the last couple years. It gives me a medium amount of overall hook and has a good amount of backend hook, while still being very controllable. The Origin EX has all of that, while picking up the lane 3-4 feet earlier. Due to that, the idea of the cover being “clean” does not really match up to what I see, at box finish. What I get is a ball that is very smooth and controllable, while still best at home on medium to medium-heavy oil conditions. The cover will not dig into oil as much as an Ion Max or RST Hyperdrive, which makes the Origin EX a great step down from either of those 2 bowling balls.

LANE CONDITION: Length: 42 Volume: Medium Type: THS COMMENTS My Layout: 4 x5 x 2 VLS SPI description: The **900 Global Origin EX** is a powerhouse designed for bowlers who need control and consistency on high-friction lanes. Featuring the **Ellipse Asymmetric A.I. Core**, this ball delivers a smooth yet strong motion, making it a reliable choice for those looking to maintain predictability without sacrificing power. Performance & Design The *RB 89 Solid Reactive coverstock* ensures the ball clears the front part of the lane effortlessly while providing a controlled backend motion. Unlike some aggressive solids that tend to overreact, the Origin EX blends the lane beautifully, offering a stable and repeatable shape. Its *2000-grit Abralon finish* enhances traction, making it ideal for medium to heavy oil conditions. #### On the Lanes Bowlers who tested the Origin EX found it to be a great option when transitioning from stronger asymmetric solids. It provides a **controlled arc** rather than a sharp snap, making it a dependable choice when lanes start to break down. The ball’s ability to maintain energy retention ensures **strong continuation through the pins**, reducing deflection and improving pin carry. My Review: Close to 30 games and a few surface changes Tested on Bowlero 42' THS medium fricition trying to get a similiar reaction to my Reality Check playing up 9-10 board at the arrows to start the Origin EX was cleaner up front with a smoother transtion in OOB condition. For me the ball needs slightly more head oiul and more friction at the breakpoint. I needed to stay firm with less miss in. 10 games in I polished it with Power Edge at 800 grit. Same pattern but more energy retention and continuation thru the pocket. Better overall usage for me as a step down game 2 ball with this adjustment. Next adjustment was @3000 no polish. Smoother with better control of the dry and better off pocket strikes. Added polish with 3000 and now I had a ball to stay in my bag. Overall I give this a solid "A" for cover versatility and 8.5 for longer usage. The Origin EX has a place in your bag, a place for all styles. Enjoy the strikes from ever angle and every style. #strikingworldwide #stormnation

Layout: 50 x 5 x 40 RG: 2.48 Differential: 0.050 Intermediate Diff: .020 Review The Origin EX is the next chapter in the 900 Global Origin series. The Reserve Blend 89 solid cover wrapped around the proven Ellipse A.I. core gives you a big ball that you can use on house and sport patterns. The Origin is versatile and responds well to surface changes for various lane patterns. I tested this ball on a 43 foot typical house pattern. I could stand anywhere from the 18 board to the 25 board without losing any hitting power. Compared to the original Origin with both balls at the box surface, the EX read the lane slightly earlier with less backend. This ball will be in my bag for leagues and tournaments. Review by Nicholas Hogan on the Origin EX Clean, Clean, Clean! This ball is so clean through the fronts making it one of the only dull big balls that I can stand further right with to start! As it shines up from lane shine it just gets even better, kind of that pearl clean skid through the fronts but not a crazy snap on the backend like a solid. I would compare it to an S2 for myself just a tad stronger overall. What I believe you can expect from this ball is, on tougher conditions you will be able to keep your angles in front of you more and not see a violent shape down lane, and on easier oil patterns, it will play kind of like a benchmark ball in a way in my opinion. 900 Global Origin EX Cover: 2000 Grit RB 89™ Solid Reactive Core: Ellipse™ + A.I. Core (Asymmetrical) Color: Orange/Red/Plum Review: 900 Global is really hitting the mark with their releases as of late and we are really excited for this solid variation to one of our favorite balls this year the Origin. We drilled this ball with our normal layout: tweener, 350-375 revs, 16.5mph, layout of choice is 5x4x2 (pin is above bridge). This is one of those bowling balls that is a home run for me. I love these clean yet angular bowling balls that seem to retain energy for days. It is literally as if the harsh reality pearl and summit ascent had a baby. Compared to the original Origin this ball is cleaner through the fronts and has more turn at the end of the lane. Overall it does hook slightly less just because of how clean it is through the front part of the lane. This ball is what I would categorize as a house shot killer. Even though it may be slightly too strong to stay in all 3 games, you seem to have infinite miss room right. Add that miss room with the AI core technology and wow this ball really is a game changer. Ball Specs: Origin Ex Cover: 2000 Grit Core: RB 89 Solid Reactive Review: I’ve been rolling the new 900 Global Origin EX for a couple of weeks now, and I’ve got to say — this ball surprised me in a good way. Right out of the box, it looks sharp, but it’s the way it moves on the lanes that makes it stand out. The first thing I noticed is how early it reads the lane. This isn’t a ball that skids too far and snaps hard in the back. Instead, it starts to grab in the mid-lane and gives a smooth, strong arc to the pocket. That makes it perfect for heavier oil or when the pattern is fresh, and I need something that won’t overreact. The motion is super controllable. It doesn’t jerk or jump off the dry boards, it just rolls forward with confidence. I felt like I could trust every shot, especially on sport shots or house shots with some volume in the middle. The core seems to carry energy well, too. Even when I missed a little inside, it still had enough drive to trip the 10 or push through a light hit. It’s not the biggest hooking ball I’ve thrown, but it’s one of the smartest. The Origin EX isn’t flashy, but it’s dependable, and that’s what wins games. If you need a solid piece that reads early, controls the mid-lane, and keeps the pins flying, this ball is worth trying. It’s earned a spot in my tournament bag, no question. The Origin EX is 900 Globals newest 900 series ball. The EX features the same Ellipse AI core found in the original Origin but is now wrapped in RB89 solid. The EX in my opinion will be in play for a longer duration of time than the original due to being cleaner and more responsive. The Origin had one of the strongest covers in the entire line so once the front part of the lane had too much friction, the Origin tended to lock up and go forward. The EX for me has been the perfect game 1 house shot ball and a great option to go to after my Ion Max. The Origin EX is now available from any Storm VIP Pro Shop! Out of Box ball motion started in the mids with a smooth backend reaction through the pins. I compared this to the Origin. Origin was 2-2 left of the Origin EX with a more angular shape on the backend motion. The Origin EX will be a good piece to start the block on medium-heavy volume patterns, then switch to the Original Origin to get through the fronts when they start to burn up. Layout: 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 2 Surface: 2000 Abralon Rev Rate: 470 RPM Tilt: 13* The new Origin EX brings back the Ellispse AI core and is paired with the new RB89 Solid Coverstock. The intent of this ball was to create a clean reaction in the front while giving the same strong midlane continuation and control that makes this one different. With today's lane surfaces getting older year after year, you need to get the ball through the higher friction front end of the lane. This is where the Origin EX comes into play. I was able to test this on a 44ft Typical House Pattern. On the fresh, I saw a pretty clean ball, strong midlane and a pretty controllable backend. This is different than your typical solid asymmetrical because this ball does not try to read immediately when you put it on the lane. Compared to the Ion Max, I saw this ball to be significantly cleaner and more controllable. The Origin EX although designed to be smooth, it can be a fresh ball or a transition ball from another stronger solid asymmetrical. As the lanes started to transition, I was able to move further left and still saw nice continuation through the pins. The biggest hurdle of this one is when I had to open my angles up. The slower controllable coverstock did not like angle too much and had trouble going through the pins if I got far enough left. On my typical house pattern, this makes this ball a little bit more one note and only really good on the fresh. I think on harder, more challenging conditions, this ball will really come to play as that stronger control piece on lane surfaces that are older. Compared to the original Origin, I saw about 3 boards less of hook overall and about 2 boards less angle down lane. The Origin is the better choice when opening the lanes up more. I think the best conditions for the Origin EX would be on the fresh on medium to longer length house patterns as well as the same length sport patterns. The control of this piece will give you more command of patterns where more shallow angles are needed. If you are an up the lane person, I can see this ball being a staple in the bag. Also, left handers would likely get good use out of this ball because it won't change direction as hard. Adam Chase Storm Staff

The layout on mine is 50 x 4 x 35. The Origin EX provides a smoother and controllable roll than the actual Origin. With the RB 89 Solid Coverstock, it’s great a ball to use when the lanes starts to transition and on higher fricition surfaces. I took this ball to one house where the lanes had a little more friction in the backend. Not only was it smoother and controllable, but the A.I. technology packed a big punch as it went through the pins and gave me great hitting power. This could be a step down from the Origin, which can be too angular off the spot, but the solid coverstock on the EX really helps blend the backend motion. A very unique shape, but this would be really good on shorter to medium patterns, especially on some flatter patterns where the oil ration is much lower. This ball is pretty good and will definitely keep this ball with me!

This ball did not react too soon and had a nice move when it got to the break point. This ball rolled equally good in the oil as well as in the friction. I expected a hook monster from the look, but I got a ball with predictability and hit when my Level is not enough or gives up on the back end. This ball has the hit that I love on my original Origin. I do not understand why I don’t see more people using the original around here. They are missing out! I think EX will sell better due to the dull surface even if I’m not sold on the color of the ball. I do understand the color blend was chosen for the performance target. Bowlers need to understand the Origin EX is not another hook in a box but has a purpose of control when you want a dull ball on higher friction lanes. The Origin EX is stronger than my Hustle Xray but much weaker than my Hyperdrive. Summary: This ball is a dull control ball for high friction lanes. The predictability and carry are very good. The Origin EX should be a ball that keeps you out of trouble on demanding conditions. Glenn Wendel Storm Pro Shop Staff
