Roto Grip RST Hyper Drive Bowling Ball

A long time ago in a bowling center far, far away...the world of bowling entered a new level of ball reaction unrest. There were countless oil conditions which added to the complexity of the game. During this revolution very few centers of bowling chose to follow the path of slicker conditions, while the greatest number of centers chose the path of less volume and less length which created more overall friction.

During that time frame, we elected to develop bowling orbs that cleared the front of the lane more easily to combat those higher friction conditions and higher friction lane surfaces to better serve the bowling republic.

More recently, however, the cries for help have echoed loudly from all around the bowling galaxy. Those cries for help all requesting greater traction with asymmetrical power to combat and fend off those heavier and longer oil conditions. So, we enlisted the help of our R&D Troops to lead this mission to restore the peace against the oil rebellion.

They wasted little time in tossing their research efforts into HYPERDRIVE to create what was needed for the masses in both the competitive and advanced levels of bowling games. In reviewing our current roster of asymmetric bowling orbs, our team of R&D troopers found that we were in fact in dire need of a more advanced propulsion block encapsulated in our MicroTrax coverstock traction system.

It was determined during this intergalactic review process that the best block to insert into our A.I. Core technology was in fact the RST (Roto Star Tour) block design. The combination of this singular density asymmetric shape encapsulated inside of an A.I. Core created an ideal amount of accelerated spin and torque thus leading to greater propulsion, thus resulting in the name HYPERDRIVE being given to this beautiful galactic bowling orb.

So, as you find yourself battling the sinister lane man at your local bowling establishment, may you find yourself at peace with the assistance of the HYPERDRIVE to combat and destroy those heavier and longer oil conditions.

The RST Hyper Drive has the famed RST Core plus AI technology wrapped in the aggressive Micro Trax solid cover, which gives you the hardest hooking Roto Grip ball since the original GEM. Not only does this ball look great but it definitely throws its weight around. This ball is great for all styles of bowling. The RST is a little cleaner than the GEM but has the same hooking energy on the backend with continuous motion with great pin carry. Order one from your local pro shop today! The Roto Grip RST Hyper Drive is a good benchmark for heavy oil patterns! The 4 x 4 x 2 layout seems to be working well for me on heavy oil patterns. It's impressive that the RST Hyper Drive handles the mid-lanes transition effectively while storing power for the back end. Being able to play multiple angles, whether it's a direct line to the pocket or creating shape from right to left, gives you a lot of versatility. The way it throws pins around the pin deck effortlessly must be quite satisfying to watch!

Cover: MicroTrax Solid Reactive Core: RST + A.I. RG: 2.52 RG. Diff.: 0.055 Finish: 2000 Abralon Roto Grip’s new RST Hyperdrive is a Solid Asymmetrical piece that is good for Heavy-Medium Volume patterns. PAP is 5 5/16 R 1 3/16 Up. Rev Rate: 400. Speed: 16.5. Drilled this piece with the Pin up above the Middle Finger, CG kicked out 1” from the palm, and 1” Left of the Mass Bias. 5x4x3. I threw this piece on a fresh house pattern. Out of Box ball motion started in the mids with a controllable backend reaction through the pins. I compared this to the XCell. XCell was 2-2 left. Started earlier in the mids with a sharper backend motion. This piece fits between the XCell and Rockstar. If you are looking for a heavy oil piece this is the one to get.

I drilled the new RST Hyperdrive 5x4x2 to give me a bit more push through the lane. My initial thought after throwing the first ball was "This thing hooks!". The RST A.I core inside the MicroTrax solid cover gives this ball the early motion, but allows the ball to get a bit further down lane than most balls with the microtrax cover. This ball give me flashbacks to the reality in terms of a big chuggy ball that still hooks down lane. I will definitely be using this as the first ball out of my bag in tournaments. I highly recommend this ball to anyone who is on the speed dominant side, or anyone who needs to fill the big early spot in their bag. 10/10 from me!

Another great Heavy oil ball. It's always nice to have a few really good Heavy oil balls the bag. I would say this one is a step down from the Ion Max. It's just a hair longer with the same drive. You definitely won't be disappointed with this one in your Arsenal..

Orientation: Right Handed Rev Rate: 400 RPM Speed: 16-17 MPH PAP: 4 ½ over and 1 1/8 up Location: Enterprise Park Lanes, Springfield MO Pattern: High Volume THS VLS Layout: Layout 1: 4 5/8 x 4 x 2 ½ (Pin above bridge) Layout 2: 4 ¼ x 4 x 4 (pin below bridge) The RST Hypedrive is a new AI RST and this time it’s a solid! Featuring the same cover as the Gem, the Hyperdrive is very similar overall, but there are quite a few differences. The Hyperdrive is slightly higher RG, meaning it gets down the lane quite a bit more than the GEM and the diff is higher too, meaning it backends more. Basically Roto Grip made a cleaner snappier version of the GEM, what more could you ask for! There were a lot of times my Gem just bogged down after a game or two, but the Hyperdrive won’t have that same issue. Often on flatter patterns I need a strong solid to control the fronts and midlane but you usually give up backend when you do that. The Hyperdrive gives you the control with the cover, but with the AI high RG/Diff core, you get the backend too! Perfect combination in a solid asym!

Ball Specs: Roto Grip RST Hyperdrive Micro Trax Solid Reactive Asymmetric RST / AI Core Finish: 2000 grit Abralon Layout: 4 x 4.5 with 1.5 Pin Buffer Bowler Specs: Right Hand. PAP 5” Over 1/2 up Rev Rate 300. Tilt 20. Rotation 50. Speed at release 17 Review: I have always liked the RST balls by Roto Grip and this new Hyperdrive is a beast. This ball is very strong at box finish. This ball was made for heavy oil. The RST is stronger than my original Gem and while still pretty smooth it seems to save more energy than my Gem and provide better carry. I first used the RST Hyperdrive on an unusually slick house shot and used the Rock Star as a comparison. The RST was much earlier and hooked more boards than the rock star which is a pretty strong ball in itself. This ball will need some oil especially up front to roll at its best. The Hyperdrive is a good looking ball but even looks better with polish. I also feel most bowlers would benefit by polishing this ball unless they bowl on very oily conditions or are very speed dominate. By polishing this ball we see more length and better hit on medium to heavily oiler house shots. This ball will be great at box finish on flatter sport or tournament conditions. Right now I believe this is the strongest dull ball in my bag and covers more boards than my Rock Star. This is a big hooking ball that was needed to replace the original Gem. Summary: I believe this is the most aggressive ball in the SPI family. The Hyperdrive hooks a lot but never seems to roll out. If you are looking for a heavy oil ball this is a great choice. The RST for me is a step down from my Ion Max/GEM and will be perfect to go to before my Physix Blackout. You remember how good the RST X1 and RST X2 were. They were so good I still have them in my arsenal today. In fact, I have two RST X1’s. Now enter Roto Grip’s newest release to combat heavier oil patterns of today. The RST Hyperdrive features the Microtrax solid reactive cover which was on the RST-X1 and Gem, two of Roto Grip’s greatest balls of all time. The mica particles and 2000 grit out of box on the Microtrax cover creates plenty of traction for medium to high volume patterns. A.I. technology has improved the RST (Roto Star Tour) core that was in all previous RSTs. It has the highest RG (2.52) of the current reactives in the SPI brand product line (similar to RST-X1’s 2.53) which ensures it doesn’t get too forward too early. The 0.055 diff gives it plenty of flare potential to have continuous motion downlane. That combination results in a pretty versatile ball at the top end of your arsenal. You can go up the lane as well as open up the front on a variety of patterns before you have to ball down to an Attention Star S2 or X-Cell. For comparison, within the current line, the RST Hyperdrive is similar to the Ion Max, but stores a little more energy and therefore has a little more backend. I drilled mine pin up, 4 ½ from my PAP with PSA 4.

The layout on this ball is 45 x 4 x 30. I have been looking for an asymmetrical solid that allows me to be versatile on all parts of the lane. With the MicroTrax coverstock, it allows me to play in heavier volumes of oil, while the high RG RST (Roto Star Tour) core provides a great amount of energy transfer once it finds fricition. This is a great ball to have on fresh medium to heavier oil patterns. On a house shot, this ball works great for me on those cliffed or wet/dry patterns. I was able to play more on the inside part of the lane, and the RST Hyperdrive helps blend it great! This ball is definitely a step down from the ION Max, which may be a little too strong in the midlane. I approve of this and will take this with me to tournaments and houses with a little more volume of oil. This ball does not disappoint!

Introducing Roto Grip’s newest addition to the HP4 series, the RST Hyperdrive! The RST is back, only this time, it is featured with AI technology. With the famous MicroTrax Solid Coverstock and the returning RST core, Roto Grip felt the need to create a super aggressive asymmetrical ball to combat those medium/heavy oil conditions. With the higher RG rating, this ball will be more continuous down lane no matter what proper sand grit you’d prepare it to. Ball layout: 45 x 4.5 x 30, same layout in comparison to my Roto Grip X-Cell. I tested my RST Hyperdrive at my home center of Cortlandt Lanes in Cortlandt Manor, NY. Contested on the 43ft THS, the Hyperdrive didn’t disappoint. Out of the box finish at 2000 grit, this ball gave me more length, more control down lane in the oil, creating enough energy and shape through the pins. I found the Hyperdrive to be a little cleaner and longer in comparison to my X-Cell. The X-Cell had more angle and an early read, but with similar results with the motion finish at the end. I would find the Hyperdrive to be more suitable with less friction on the lanes, that way you can play the oil as long as you can until the track area opens up and you can no longer control the pocket. Per example, the straighter I was with my feet and boards, the better results I could get. As I moved right (left handed) with my feet and swinging it into the friction, the less results it produced. Putting some shine on the ball can also be a factor if you are looking for cleaner results. Overall, I was mighty impressed with the ball motion the Hyperdrive can create and can benefit those bowlers contesting those medium/heavy lane conditions. Be sure to stop by your local pro shop and drill up a Hyperdrive today! You won’t be disappointed! Thomas Coco (Storm Staffer)

I have thrown the other RST’s in this line but none have impressed me the way that this one has. Before I go further let me just say that this ball seems to react like an Asym Rockstar so yes these two balls can be a great 1-2 punch on league shots. So as the older and lower rev player my concern was going to be the out of box surface. I can tell you that is not an issue with this ball. Now for lane play I was able to use this ball for a full night and depending on how quick your house shot goes away this ball can be a one game ball as it was for me on my Monday league before they got super cliffed, but on Thursday at a center that has a league pattern that holds up very well this was an all three game ball. Other factors would also be if you change the surface. I decided to keep the 2000 on it and for me it matches up very well. Layout: 5 x 3 ½ x 2 ½ Surface 4000 abralon Rev rate: 470 Tilt: 13* Rotation: 60* The RST Hyperdrive brings AI technology to the RST core for the first time and is paired with the Microtrax solid coverstock found on the Original Gem. The combination brings a cleaner core with strong midlane strength for heavier oil conditions. If you bowl on aging lane surfaces like I do, you'll certainly appreciate this ball. The RST X1 has been one of my favorite balls on the Roto Grip side and I was really excited for this one. I brought the surface up to 4000 because of how well my Gem did at this surface for my league. For my 44ft typical house shot, the Hyperdrive did not disappoint. The cleaner core and cover surface got the ball easily through the front of the lane and the strong coverstock under the 4000 got the ball to still read the midlane strong and earlier enough to continue well. I was able to use it easily on the fresh seeing strong midlane and ample continuation down lane. The overall strength of the ball still forced me a little further left on the fresh than typical but it had no problem making the right move in the backend. In fact, I never had any fear that the ball would not hook. As the lanes transitioned, I generally have trouble getting the ball to slow down in the 44ft of oil as the lanes tend to get more wet dry. The Hyperdrive hooked enough in the oil where that over under reaction was gone. I did have to move my eyes into the oil some more to stop the ball from over hooking but again had no issue. As the lanes transitioned again, I was able to continue to move left and see strong shape still through the pins. I was able to use the Hyperdrive for all 3 games of league with ease which is a rarity for me. Compared to the X-Cell, I saw an earlier and stronger overall move. I recommend this for anyone who wants a ball for the fresh that wants to see something a little more length before a strong move down lane than traditional asymmetrical solid balls. Lower Rev rates will also enjoy this one due to its coverstock strength. Heavier oil volumes and sport patterns will bode well with this ball as well. Certainly, bring the surface up on this ball if the out of box surface is too early rolling.

The Roto Grip Hyperdrive comes with the MicroTrax Solid Reactive, RST + A.I. Core, and 2000-grit surface. This is the 4th ball stateside in the RST line and Roto’s new big asym ball. With the RG being higher on this ball I expected it to get a little more length and more pop down lane even with the big cover and it does just that. I have the Hyperdrive below the ION Max and it is not as early but in the same strength category, just a touch longer with more shape. The Hyperdrive should be more usable on your typical house shot and give you more shape down lane when you need it on the heavier sport patterns. I have the Gem as the strongest, ION Max is next, and then I put the Hyperdrive after the Max strength wise front to back on the lanes. This is going to be a home run from Roto Grip! The Roto Grip RST Hyper Drive is a powerhouse for bowlers seeking strong mid-lane read with a controlled yet aggressive backend motion. Featuring the RST + A.I. Core and the MicroTrax Solid Coverstock, this ball blends the best of both worlds—strong traction in oil while retaining energy for a dynamic finish. Out of the box at 2000-grit Abralon, it handles medium to heavy oil conditions exceptionally well, providing a smooth yet continuous motion without being overly sharp. Compared to the original RST X-1 and X-2, the Hyper Drive offers a slightly earlier roll with a more predictable backend, making it ideal for players who want consistency without sacrificing hitting power. Whether you're a high-rev player looking for control or a straighter player needing extra motion, the RST Hyper Drive delivers a well-balanced reaction that excels in transition.

The Hyperdrive is definitely the ball I have been looking for on Wednesday nights, it gives me the little extra grip that I was missing before. The RST core design, A.I. technology and the MicroTrax coverstock definitely makes this ball a monster. It also keeps the strong motion downlane where most fall off. I am also really looking forward on having this ball for some tournaments where the patterns might be longer and more volume.

The powerful Microtrax cover that was featured on the Gem is teamed up with Roto Star core that was featured on the previous RST releases, this time upgraded with the Amplified Inertia (A.I) technology. This combination should give you a stronger midlane read than the previous RST balls but more down-lane hook than the Gem. I tested the RST Hyperdrive for the first time in league. Our house pattern is 44 feet long and high volume so this seemed like the perfect spot to throw it. The first few shots did want to pick up right away, which wasn't too surprising with how much our front panels hook. I bumped a little left to find the pocket, but the ball was pretty flat going through the pins. I had trouble getting the ball far enough right and when moved left enough to get it there, it didn't retain much energy. The adjustment I've found that works best when I see this ball reaction is to throw the ball a little bit further out on the lane, to take the early friction out of play. This worked very well with the RST Hyperdrive as long as I got it into the friction to the right early enough. If I got the ball more in the track around 7-8 it had a chance to strike but it showed noticeably less energy going through the pins compared to if I got the ball out more in the 4-5 board range. If I made sure to catch the fingers well, I could strike pretty consistently in this range of boards down-lane. I think this ball will be pretty popular for people who are a little more speed dominant or those bowling on heavier oil patterns. It does have a reasonable long transition when it starts to hook but that was also partly due to my choice of layout. In a house with quicker back-ends but the same oil up front I think it would look fantastic. It definitely falls in between a Gem and the RST in terms of reaction and shape. And do you like to play straighter lines and angles? Then pay close attention because the RST Hyperdrive by Roto Grip is a perfect fit for your arsenal! Roto Grip has done a superb job of combining the RST + A.I. core with their MicroTrax Solid reactive coverstock to make the RST Hyperdrive a ball for straighter players to get excited about! So, let's take a closer look at the brilliance behind the RST Hyperdrive! The RST (Roto Star Tour) + A.I. core is an excellent combination of torque, explosive energy, and strong continuation. I liked how the RST block inside the A.I. technology created an intense and persistent torque off my hand and down the lane. Unlike other asymmetric cores that tend to be lazy and rev later, I like how the RST core was vibrant in the mid-lane and kept building its energy as it headed down the lane. And with the addition of the A.I. Core wrapped around the RST block, there is no stopping the RST Hyperdrive! I loved how the combination of RST + A.I. core technology gave my straighter hand the explosive and striking impact at the pins I can count on. And when my low rev hand is kicking out corner pins from that steamrolling continuation the RST Hyperdrive provided, I know I am in for a great night of scoring! So, the RST + A.I. Core is an excellent fit for straighter players. The MicroTrax Solid Reactive coverstock perfectly complements the RST + A.I. Core. It brings the RST Hyperdrive to a whole new level of striking power! Being a rev-challenged player, the coverstock on a ball can make or break my game, especially in medium to heavy oil conditions. However, with the MicroTrax solid reactive cover, there was no doubt that the MicroTrax solid and the factory 2000-grit Abralon surface would bring excellent results. The MicroTrax solid cut through the front part of the lane crisply yet had smooth and predictable traction in the mid-lane. Surprisingly, I loved how the MicroTrax solid responds to friction with a continuous, assertive bite without being so overly aggressive that it causes the ball to roll out. Lastly, as a straighter player, I liked how the MicroTrax Solid gave me the confidence to stay in my A-game for most of the night. So, if you're a straighter player, the MicroTrax solid coverstock is an excellent choice for game one and even game two on a THS, depending on your speed and rev rate. And suppose you're thinking about trying or dabbling with pattern bowling. In that case, the MicroTrax Solid reactive coverstock makes the RST Hyperdrive a great choice. In closing, I was highly impressed with the RST Hyperdrive by Roto Grip. And there is no question -Roto Grip is undoubtedly keeping the legacy of their RST line alive with the RST Hyperdrive! The RST Hyperdrive is an excellent combination of RST + A.I. core and MicroTrax coverstock that will complement any straighter player's arsenal.
