It is what it is
I recently got back into bowling (with all of the leagues, prices and "neon party bowl!" gimmicks I'm remembering why I stopped!) I gave my son my reactive resin storm balls and started looking for older balls at thrift stores. I want to find what I like and to experiment with finger patterns. I was using a Brunswick rubber ball for a while so I wasn't totally surprised by this ball's performance. The existing holes were almost perfect for fingertip but I did have inserts added for my middle and ring finger. Overall performance is as expected. A traditional "suitcase" approach without exerting too much for the hook (I have a wrist injury from years ago I need to be mindful of) on a medium oil pattern puts the throw somewhere between the 10 and 15 and produces enough hook at the end to deliver a quality pocket shot. A heavy and longer oil pattern and I need to throw no further right than the 15. After a few games I might not get any noticiable hook at all even after wiping the ball. The leather shammy does help. On a light oil pattern the ball is a joy to use and I can hook it almost as much as I need and it fits my natural swing. Oil pattern is everything and plays a decisive role which is why I wanted a rubber ball. I want to build my knowledge of the game and ability to adapt beyond just my swing mechanics. I have a urethane gyro which has much better reaction after the oil but is still very susceptible to heavy oil and distance. Overall this ball does have a place in my bag as a spare ball or a light/short oil pattern. I'm very confident picking up the 7 and the 10 (separately of course!) as the hook is tame enough to ride without too much break at the end. I would guess an average of 140 for the last several weeks of bowling with this and the other gyro. I am just getting back into it and I definitely see room for much higher scores once I get my swing grooved again.
