Storm Proton Physix Bowling Ball

The Proton Physix is the third release in the premium line of bowling balls from Storm, the Bowler's company to use the Atomic weight block, but with the added feature of the new NeX solid reactive coverstock that is factory finished with a 2000 grit abralon pad. The bright magenta, black, and violet really stands out on the ball return. The numbers on the Proton Physix in 15lb weights are 2.48 rg, 0.053 diff, and 0.017 intermediate diff. I drilled my Proton Physix with a layout of 4.5 X 2 X 4. This is the same layout I have on Gravity Evolve that is always in the bag for tournaments. The Proton Physix reads the fronts, the midlane, and the backend stronger than what the Evolve does. The NeX solid cover really likes large amounts of oil. Comparing the Proton to an Axiom with the same pin placement, the Proton is a lot more defined at the breakpoint and rolls heavier toward the pins. The Proton Physix needs oil, and I seem to have the best look when there is some carry-down on the backend of the lane. If I can't get hook or backend reaction out of any of my other bowling balls, I know that I can get motion from my Proton Physix. I have used the Proton at the factory finish of 2000, as well as sanded to a lower grit of 1000, and still get motion throughout the lane. The Proton Physix is a hook monster and likes oil, and lots of it. This ball will be a great ball for bowlers that are speed dominant and maybe don't have such a high rev rate. Higher rev players will need lots of oil for the Proton to perform as Storm intended it to. If you are looking for big traction with shape on the lane, look no further than the Proton Physix. The Proton Physix features the same Atomic core found in the original Physix and the Astrophysix, and features the Nex solid coverstock previously found on the Axiom. This combination makes the most hooking ball in Storm's lineup. This will be the first ball out of the bag on the heavier volume patterns. Compared to the Axiom, the Proton Physix is more angular on the backend and a good 3 to 4 boards more overall hook. The surprising thing to me about this ball, is the recovery it has the deeper you have to move and open up your angles thru the front part of the lanes. For me, the bigger asymmetrical balls tend to go forward to soon to play big angles but that is not the case with this ball. For me this ball is best when playing straighter up the boards on the heavy patterns, but it is much more versatile than most big hook balls. As long as there is a good amount of oil towards the middle of the lane, this ball allows me to get in and throw it to the dry and has plenty of downlane recovery. Strokers in particular will really like the overall hook the Proton Physix provides but all styles will be able to use this sneaky versatile hook monster.

First, some stats about me. I am a medium speed (15-16 MPH) player and slightly rev dominant. Last I checked, rev rate around 380 RPM. My A game is playing the middle part of the lane on a house pattern (between 15 and 20 at the arrows) but do not have a problem moving to either extreme if the pattern calls for it. My PAP is 4 7/16 over by 5/16 up. The layout used on the ball is a 40 x 4 3/8 x 65. I set this up to be a perfect ball to get into a roll early and be nice and round downlane. I wanted it for use when the pattern has heavy volume or some length to it. The lane surface at my home house, Port Huron Lanes in Port Huron, MI, is Brunswick ProLane with a 42' medium volume house oil pattern. Overall, this ball was much too strong for our local house condition, as I was forced to start in around 4th arrow with my normal hand release. This ball's tendency to be very slow up front held true but to my surprise, still had some punch downlane when I thought it would be dead on arrival. It was still very responsive to hand position changes, even with the super strong cover. I can see this ball being a perfect matchup for the lower rev or speed dominant players. For my style, this ball is going to nestle itself into that tournament "big ball" slot in my bag and be exactly what I drilled it for! Go get one today!

Layout: 35 x 5 x 65 The Proton Physix is the new true heavy-oil ball in Storm's lineup, and is the strongest ball being produced out of Utah. It has a massive amount of midlane roll to dig through any heavy oil pattern, while still retaining enough energy to go through the pins very well. Even though it is a very strong ball, it does not roll as early as the heavy oil balls of past generations. This allows it to be used whenever there is a good bit of head oil. The Proton Physix has more overall motion than the recently released Incite, which is cleaner through the front part of the lane with a more pronounced backend reaction. The Proton Physix is not the best ball choice for drier lanes, though the ball was certainly not created to be used on those conditions.

The new addition to the Storm Premier Line is Proton Physix. I have had good success with the regular Physix and Astro. The Proton I drilled pin up 5 .25 x 5 x 2.5. With the very strong NeX Solid coverstock the Proton for me needs some oil especially up front. I added some shine to the cover and it gave me the extra that I needed. But this ball is very strong, but with Atomic core it does continue real through the pins. Compared to the popular Global Reality, I think the Proton has more down lane motion. When I see this ball it really reminds me of the old Roto Grip ball the Defiant. A ball that like to hook a lot but it was a ball that you could control. An asymmetric ball that likes to hook while also being controllable and smooth rolling? Sign me up! This ball is great on the conditions where the lanes are just flooded with oil and you need something that can cut through the oil and create that line for you to score. I am a player that matches well with his rev rate (380) and speed (17mph) Sport average : 190 House shot : 220 Layout : 55 x 4 3/4 x 30 Bowlers who don't understand who those numbers mean a voice, don't get discouraged. Please ask your local pro shop for some help. When using this high performance bowling ball, I tend to look for a place that has very heavy oil so I can get the continuous motion that ball maintains. I try to keep this ball in the oil as long as possible because if I don't the ball will burn up in the friction. Once the ball burns up it will not have enough energy to the pocket. THIS BALL NEEDS OIL! Bowlers who are speed dominate and not rev rate dominate will absolutely love this ball.

When it comes to the physix line I have nothing but great expectations from here on out!! I loved my Astro and now with the addition of the Proton I am very excited how these two can take over the lanes in different ways. The Astro is great for me later in blocks when I need to chase it left when they start hooking to much. I can get it down the lane enough not to lose energy for me but still get that backend pop. As for the Proton Physix I can use this on tougher longer patters by far my most hooking ball when it comes it tournaments. I can also start with the Proton in league then drop down to my Astro. Don't have any negative feed back on this one.

Proton Physix. Overall, a very strong ball. Really picks up early, and has a continuous overall hook motion. This ball hooks in the oil with ease, but does not lose motion off the dry boards as well. This is a ball that will allow you move inside further and sooner, and not lose reaction down lane and through the pins. Not ideal for short oil or lower volumes, as the ball needs the oil to perform at is best. Will be the 1st ball out on anything longer than 40' or heavier volume sport patterns. The Proton Physix has offered success to anyone who has made the decision to add one to their arsenal. With its strong core and cover combination, it allows for amazing shape for players of all styles. Both low and high revolutions players will find an ability to generate room and angle on patterns of all lengths. This is one of the most versatile balls I have seen in the past 10 years, allowing players to stay right and minimize angles and move left and generate more angle. Due to this high versatility, it has a place in every player's arsenal. I personally laid out this ball pin down in order to be successful on fresh medium/longer patterns. After having a bunch of success with the original Physix and Astro Physix, the Proton is the newest addition to the Premier Line. After drilling two Proton's so far, it's earned the spot as the strongest ball in my bag. I've had a bunch of success on multiple patterns with the Proton and it goes everywhere with me. With an RG of 2.48 and differential of .053, the Proton is best used for heavier volume patterns and tighter lane surfaces. The first one I drilled is mapped out as 5.5 x 5 x 75 and I tweaked the surface to 4000 and water. This still left the teeth in the coverstock because I didn't want to use polish, and the Proton flies through the front and provides a quicker, but forward motion down-lane. This has been a perfect ball to use after a pattern blends and I need to open up my angles. The second one I drilled is mapped out as 4 x 4 x 50 and I've since hit the surface with a 1000 pad. This has been a perfect ball for the longer patterns with more volume. I've had success keeping this Proton in front of me without opening up my angles too much. Overall, the two I've drilled compliment each other nicely and can be used on multiple patterns. If you need a "bigger" ball in your bag that can be used on multiple patterns, drill a Proton Physix! #StormNation

Handed Asymmetrical balls and I have a hard time matching up, it has taken me a while to see what the Proton would really do. This ball hits like a TANK!! The more I throw it the better it got. Now I really like the ball motion and how strong it is. I drilled this OOB 45 x 4 x 30. Which puts the pin above my ring finger a little taller. I left the cover OOB. I am not sure I like the layout I have on it I am thinking I will drill another a little different. But it is working. For me, the Proton is smooth and predictable with a strong backend motion. It picks up well and does not seem to lose energy for me as some Asymmetrical balls do. A I have a hard time getting Asymmetrical to get through the pins without burning up and getting the right shape. I can move in and trust the ball will turn the corner which is very difficulty for me since I am a speed dominant lower rev player. I can see myself using this right out to the bag on the fresh. This ball has a lot of versatility a home run for Storm in the Physix lineup.

The result is... you guessed it, HOOK! The NEX coverstock's Nano formulation will dominate high volume patterns while the Atomic core provides the hook and hit. I tested the Proton Physix (or attempted to) on my normal house shot. My league house is notorious for friction in the front of the lane. It didn't take many shots to figure out that even on a freshly oiled lane, the cover of the Proton Physix would not ignore the front of the lane enough to be useful for me in league. Rather than trying to make it work, I opted to wait until I was on a condition where it would be right. I got my opportunity when the pattern league in our house put out the PBA Dragon pattern. I managed to get some practice in on a freshly dressed lane and boy oh boy did the Proton look great. I usually try to get a feel for what a ball will do in multiple parts of the lane. On 45 feet of oil I often don't feel like I have the flexibility to play different parts of the lane. I first tried playing straighter with the Proton, using the friction in the track but not really trying to be under the ball. The Proton was exceptional here, probably due partly to the weaker layout I had opted for. This by far was the area where I felt like i had the most miss room. The cover corrected shots where I was a bit too clean out of the ball and the pattern length gave me plenty of hold. I then figured I'd move in and play where I would normally play when looking at the graph, a slight left to right fade but keeping the ball fairly tight to the headpin. This also gave me a good look, somewhat better than i was expecting as I usually opt for ball that are a little quicker to create the angle in a smaller window down-lane. The ball would save shots that leaked a bit into the track but I could still overthrow the ball and take three off the right if missed it with this angle. This again may have been due to the layout I chose. I didn't spend alot of time deeper and trying to roll it as I felt with the slower transition layout I had less miss room as I got left. My takeaway from the testing was that I wouldn't recommend the Proton Physix in any house where you don't have oil in the front of the lane. It should look best on house shots for Rev Challenged/Speed Dominant players. However this is a ball that any bowler who bowls on tournament patterns should own.

Being a 900 Global staffer, I did not have the opportunity until recently to throw Storm and knew I wanted to get a strong asymmetrical solid as I've always known they have always delivered good equipment. I've always struggled with getting strong asymmetrical to turn the corner and carry the 10 or not burn up. The Proton Physix was everything I've been missing. I drilled in 50x4 1/2x45 and I have a slower ball speed and have 12 degrees of tilt. After drilling I was very impressed with the continuous early roll without the loss of hitting power. I did eventually put a little polish by hand just to have the ability to play a little deeper and have it turn the corner better which now helps being able to stay with this ball during a full league session. After throwing this ball for a week the overall strength impressed me as well as the ability to keep moving left, but the thing that impressed me the most is the NeX cover. I was expecting it to be strong which it is, but was not expecting it to work as well on lanes that are very wet dry. I don't have to be afraid move left and send it to the dry. The NeX cover doesn't over react off the dry nor does it burn up too much like you could see from strong asymmetrical solids. I am really excited for the Hyroad Maxx and look forward to that being a good down ball from the Proton Physix.

The Storm Proton Physix is the solid cover-stock version of the Physix line of bowling balls. With the NEX cover and the larger Atomic core, this ball, like the others in the Physix family, wants to rev up quick and dig in. I went with my favorite 75x4.5x45 layout. I was very happy with how well this aggressive cover and core dealt with the wet/dry pattern and wood surface I tested on. Where compared to anything peal the Proton Physix blended the hard edge of the pattern while the pearl stood up and rolled out. The Proton Physix opened the pattern for me and got stronger and stronger the more I moved in. You're going to get what you expect out of this ball. It's ability to pick up, recover and take a hard arc to the pocket is precisely why this ball will work on a range of patterns from medium to heavy volume.

The Storm Proton Physix is a ball you need when you are on those slicker lanes and your ball just doesn't get going soon enough. This ball is a hook monster. This will help you "open the lane". Tracks through the oil very well, hit the dry and this ball moves sharp off the spot. It gets through the heads fairly clean as long as you have oil, reads the mid-lane earlier than the original Physix and finishes very strong and powerful. It hits with so much power, pins explode. I was able to play the big puddle of oil on the THS and play deeper from the start. You'll have to increase speed as the oil goes away or move in deeper. It's the perfect compliments to the Physix series when you need earlier and stronger. My PAP is 5-1/8 and 1/8 up. Usually around 15-16mph, I'd probably be classified between and tweener and cranker.

Low rev players that need a little extra help will love this ball on a traditional house shot. Seasoned veterans who love to play the entire lane will love this ball. Tournament players and pros who see a variety of heavy oil conditions will love this ball if they need to open up the lane a little bit and create a little area. The newer asymmetrical bowling ball that Storm has created. This ball features the NeX Solid Reactive Coverstock wrapped around the Atomic Core. The NeX Solid Reactive was featured In the Axiom and the Atomic Core was featured in the original Physix. My Proton is drilled with the pin above the bridge - which is about 3 inches away from my PAP. I have the MB kicked away right. This ball hooks a TON out of the box. By far and away the most aggressive ball that Storm has created, in my opinion. From start to finish this ball is very aggressive. The Proton is a great option for anyone that bowls on heavier oil conditions.

Holy Hook Batman! This is by far the strongest ball, out of the box, that I have ever thrown! This bad boy is some how early and some how still manages to generate a bunch of angle down lane. I bowl mostly on house conditions, there is no way I could leave this at box finish and throw it...ever. I took quite a bit of surface off of it. I hit it with a 3000 pad and then again with a 4000 pad. This allowed the ball to be cleaner through the front, and generating a very strong motion down lane. This is for sure for the bowler that needs to cut through the oil on a loaded up house shot with a hard lane surface like ProAnvilane.
