Rebel Tank

This may be a bit out of character for me in terms of the latest releases MOTIV has graced us with my friends, the Rebel Tank. The reason you may ask? The answer is simple, and that is ‘unique. Now you must be thinking to yourself, “Unique, whatever do you mean?” Allow me to explain MOTIV faithfuls, I assure you that you will be pleased that you continued on. Now, I must confess, I have never thrown a urethane cover stock in my bowling career that I can recall. Funny enough, I have actually owned and through a good old fashion Black Beauty rubber bowling ball many years ago, but never a urethane ball. So, with the Rebel Tank, this was my first experience throwing such a cover stock. How does one proceed to review a ball when have no past experiences with a urethane cover? All you can do is go with what you know best, and that ball motion and the piece’s functionality in your arsenal. I have always been a huge advocate for smooth arc ball motion, to me it is so much easier to predict. From a competition standpoint, I feel smooth arc is the way go in order to keep the shot in front of you. Now this can be quite difficult to do the shorter and/or the more burnt the shot becomes. Now I must admit, with the bowling style I have, keeping the shot in front of me with a reactive resin is manageable. With the introduction of the Rebel Tank, however, there is now a new dimension that must be considered. One of the smartest moves MOTIV has taken in my opinion with the Rebel Tank, is utilizing the Halogen core that has been featured and well proven in both the Tribal line and Tag, allowing for better down lane continuation that is a must for urethane cover stocks. In my practice sessions with this piece, I learned very quickly that I can easily dictate what I want this ball to do down lane and not be concerned at any point that the ball will not reaction when i expect it to due so. Allow me to share a fun story with you, there had been one evening in leagues that I just could not get any of my regular equipment to give me the reaction i was looking for as well as carry. My scores were just not up to par to say the least. Well, I decided to have some fun and also take advantage of the time to experiment with my Rebel Tank. The pair I was bowling on had nothing but party/open bowling take place prior to our league and the lanes were not re-oiled. It is always a surprise as to what you will see on this pair. With this being said, I decided to take my Rebel Tank and simply play up 5 to see the type of look I would have. To my surprise, my first shot was a high-flush 8 Pin, I could not help but laugh at what I was doing. I decided to continue on with this game, keeping the game simple with a straight up the boards with a urethane piece. During the entire game, I spoke with an older gentlemen that had bowled along side of me for several years and was familiar with my style, he commended me for the experiment. He commitmented on what my game has been over the years and was very impressed with the fact that I am willing to experiment with a dimension of the game, that, although may not be needed in my bag of tricks, just the desire to experiment with and and make it a strength speaks volumes to my desire to be remain competitive and pursue growth. For the remainder of the game, i continued to throw the Rebel tank. Although it was not a score worthy of the record books, the fact that I was able to keep the pattern in front of me and keep the ball in the pocket and not a single weak, I can’t wait to unleash this on a short pattern! This ball is the newest urethane introduction into the MOTIV line of bowling balls. The MOTIV Rebel Tank features the new DMX Pearl Urethane coverstock combined with the Halogen core. It's clean through the front of the lane, makes a predictable move off the spot and stores energy for down lane movement. And most important, it has the more continuation than any urethane ball I have ever thrown. It will be a great fit in your bag on light/short oil patterns. My Rebel Tank is laid out with the pin above the ring finger, the cg kicked slightly to the right and has extra hole just below my PAP. Most urethane balls I have seen tend to roll early and burn up. The Rebel Tank is NOT like most urethane balls. It clears the front, even on very dry lanes, and saves energy for more down lane movement then you get out of your normal urethane ball. The Rebel Tank is the latest urethane ball introduced by Motiv. Featuring a new DMX Pearl Urethane cover sanded to 4000 LSS Grit and the Halogen core, the Rebel Tank provides more push through the front with a mild hook in the back end compared to the original Tank which hooked much sooner with very little backend motion. The Rebel Tank is an ideal choice when bowling on the 32 foot Wolf pattern or the 35 foot Cheetah pattern and some league patterns with a high friction lane surface. I have my Rebel Tank drilled with an old school urethane layout in which the pin and CG are 3 3/8 from my axis. This provides a clean push through the front with a mild hook reaction in the back end of the lane. The Rebel Tank may not be the first ball out of the bag but I never leave home without urethane, whether it's league or tournament.

Motiv Rebel Tank I drilled this ball 70 X 4.5" X 70, with the intent to use this ball on really light oil patterns or shorter patterns that I need to control the down lane motion. The Rebel is a ball that harkens back to the days of good urethane. The use of the Halogen core with the urethane cover I believe is a brilliant choice. This ball will allow heavy hitters an option on the short or low volume patterns so we do not have to be lofting the gutter cap or seeing the ball Wang off the spot to hard. The Rebel tank is a must for me in the bag no matter where I will be traveling. I have switched over and I am using this as my spare ball. Plastic balls don't read the enough for me and the light resin balls read to much. The Rebel takes care of all of these issue. About: The Rebel Tank is a DMX pearl urethane using the popular Halogen core(Seen in Tribal line and Graffiti Tag) at 4000 Grit LSS out of box. This provides easy length when the heads are absolutely beat up or you are on a short oil pattern. The core gives this ball strong continuation off the spot Comments: Being a lower rev player(300-325) I would not normally reach for a pearl urethane ball. But this new release from Motiv really is impressive. When the fronts break down at the end of a long league session or on short oil patterns I have found this to be a nice alternative. I have mine drilled at 60-4-30 and this ball continues off the spot through the pins like no other urethane I have ever used. You have to keep in mind that this is a very specific piece, for a certain condition, but when that condition presents itself you need this in your bag. Tournament players who face a long block on the burn will really appreciate this ball when the pairs are hooking out the door. The Rebel Tank features the DMX Pearl Urethane Cover and the Halogen Core to create an early and smooth motion that does not track out as quickly as other urethanes on the market. I really like this ball because I can use it in the friction to play the typical shape a bowler would expect to use with urethane. I used to struggle with the original tank because it was sensitive to the wet-dry conditions, and I tended to have an over-under look with it. I have not run into that situation with the Rebel Tank. In fact, even with the Pearl Cover, it sits in oil better than the original Tank did. I am really excited to have this trust worthy urethane in my bag at every event I go to! Rebel Tank So me use Urethane? An interesting thought ..but one that really never enters my mind. At least not usually. Of course that’s before I hit a PBA event with a short oil pattern on wood! WOW…Where did that come from? Well low and behold I was in search of an answer and guess where I found it! Right in my bag …YES.. I cant believe I have my Rebel Tank! Ok so you say who needs Urethane anymore--- THIS GUY! – Especially as I have gotten older and moved on o the PBA50 tour. The Oil volume is lower, my ball speed is reduced…Yea I said it Im getting older and I need the control and consistency of Urethane. This ball is BEAST! Its Pearlized Urethane cover reduces the friction of the ball to the dry lane and helps to tame down that inconsistent or early read you get from every other type of ball on the market! Review: The Rebel Tank is newest and latest release from Motiv Bowling. This pearl urethane is built to be a force to be reckoned with on light oil conditions. The Rebel Tank brings together the DMX Pearl Urethane cover stock that was first used on the Arctic Sniper and Motiv put that with the very successful Halogen core, the Rebel Tank will retain its energy down lane and strong continuation through the pins that when the lanes are hooking and you need that retainable energy then the Rebel Tank is the ball for you. Being a higher rev player, I often see breakdown quick and by third game I struggle sometimes to get something down lane without killing the bowling ball energy. Now this doesn’t happen every time but when it does the Rebel Tank is that go to ball. What I love about this piece like most urethane is that it won’t over react. That’s something I see sometimes when it comes down to the third game in league. What I also like about this piece is that it retains its energy just like another other bowling ball but the continuation through the pins is insane for a urethane ball. I felt my strike percentage went up compared to any other urethane that I have ever thrown. Tournament bowlers would love this piece for short oil conditions or when you get on a pair that is flat out hooking this will be the piece for you. League bowlers that have higher revs would like this and players who have lower ball speed need that length without losing energy the Rebel Tank will be for you. The Rebel Tank retains energy for continuation through the pins which is achieved through both a high RG and moderate differential. Out of box surface: 4000 Grit LSS Layout: 40/14/19 Ball Reaction: The Rebel Tank allows me to play on very short and low oil patterns; I can play straighter and tighten my angles without the ball jerking down lane. Its smoother and longer than its older sibling Tank, I attribute that to the cover/core combination of the Rebel. In terms of friction encounter the Rebel is smooth from start to finish, a lot of control and continuation. Comparisons Apex Ascent: The Apex Ascent possesses more backend and hook than the Rebel; however the Rebel is longer than the Apex. I use my Apex on medium light-light oil patterns; once I see the Apex start to check harder than usual I’m retreating to my Rebel. I can control drier patterns with minimal effort with the Rebel than I can with the Apex. Tank: The Tank Rebel possesses more length, hook, and backend than the original Tank. In comparing both of them on short patterns I was able to bounce the Rebel off of the dry essentially wheeling the entire lane, unlike what I was able to do with the original. I used the original Tank to play into the dry allowing the ball to roll up, because the original tank grabbed much sooner than the Rebel. Truthfully with both of them in my bag I now have two options when encountering excessive friction, I can either use my Rebel and bounce it off of the dry or I can use the Tank and feed it into the dry early going high flush. Summary: I pull out my Rebel when there is too much of a good thing, that good thing being friction. I can play wherever I want to using the Rebel as long there is enough friction for it, it will do as advertised. Once it reaches the end of the pattern it calmly rolls over into the pocket and delivers crushing continuation; I am thrilled by the continuation this ball because it’s pearl urethane. The Rebel is great piece of weaponry to have in your bag for those early burn games or those late game grinders on a high friction, definitely a worthwhile weapon to have in your bag. So ask yourself this. Why place a bowling ball in your bag when you can put a Tank in it? Rebel against friction, I encourage it. Your game will thank you for it. The Rebel Tank features the DMX Pearl urethane cover that is used on the Arctic Sniper spare ball. The core is the Halogen core first used in the original Tribal. This simple shape just coincides with that smooth, predictable shape that urethane provides. I loved the original Tank but for me the Gear core had a tendency to get forward too quickly at times and being that the cover was urethane, it would plaque a lot. The Rebel Tank is that same basic motion, but it is a little cleaner and slightly more continuous. The Rebel Tank with a stronger layout and more surface would be applicable for the fresh for those of you who missed out on an original Tank. I have used my Rebel on some local house conditions particularly when I want to play right in that scorched part of the lane outside of second arrow. When it works you would never know that it is urethane watching it go through the pins. I have also thrown my Rebel on the PBA Wolf pattern. This pattern is extremely flat and short. Not a whole lot of margin for error. The Rebel Tank will allow you to keep your target on line and create some hold that you wouldn't find with slow response, more aggressive balls. I have firm ball speed so I haven't used this piece a whole lot yet, but when I do it is gold. It is pretty neat because urethane requires you to really catch it and slow down your ball speed which is not as prevalent in the modern game. Slower speed bowlers and the older crowd will really appreciate the ease of length and control that the Rebel Tank provides. I know a few senior bowlers around my area who bowl league with the Arctic Sniper because it is the only thing that matches up but they sacrifice so much pin carry. I would highly recommend punching up a Rebel Tank so that they get a little extra pop from the core which should give a little extra carry.

There are times when straighter is greater, and urethane is just the ticket. The Rebel Tank pairs the low friction cover from Motiv’s Arctic Sniper, with the classic halogen “light bulb” core. The best time to use the Rebel Tank is on those pesky short oil patterns, when playing the gutter typically leads to the best results. But, I’ve also found that I can also use my Rebel Tank on a house shot – by playing far more right in the dry zone than I typically do with my stronger reactive resin balls. The classic hook shape reminds me of the 1980’s, and so are the adjustments. With the Rebel Tank, I find myself making ½ and 1 board adjustments … during a typical league session I may move 3 or 4 boards all night, when I may move 2 or 3 arrows with my Revolt Vengeance, for example. Whenever I encounter a pattern that needs to be attacked from the outside, the Rebel Tank will be my “go to” ball from now on.

Layout: 70 x 4 ¼ x 60 The newest addition to the Motiv line up is built for the lanes get absolutely scorched and your typical low-end reactive ball is too much. The Rebel Tank combines the DMX Pearl Urethane coverstock originally used on the Arctic Sniper (finished at 4000 LSS) and combines it with the proven Halogen core (2.55RG, .037). This pairing gives you more overall hook than the Arctic thanks to the dynamic core but still less than the reactive Ascent line; a very nice go between for when the lanes become drier than the Sahara. I drilled mine to optimize the smoothness that urethane gives. My Rebel Tank glides through the heads and mids with absolute ease. While I can see the ball flaring thanks to the Halogen it still does not aggressively grab the lane and make any sudden motions. Once it hits the end of the pattern it calmly transitions into a roll that can walk into the pocket and deliver a powerful blow to the pins; I am pleasantly surprised by the continuation this ball has being a urethane. While I can significantly square up the lane and throw this ball on a fresher shot, my games sees the most benefit much later in the day when control and consistancy will win the day. I highly recommend this ball for those needing something for the later games of a long block or those heavy-handed throwers who need something that is tame and will not react violently to the first bit of friction it sees. With all Urethane balls, the Rebel Tank is great on short and low volumes of oil. The tank is made to be played more direct up the lane as the ball will not flare too much even with a strong drilling. The rebel tank is cleaner and a little weaker then the original Tank but more ball then the Artic Sniper. The Rebel Tank fits right in between the original Tank and Artic Sniper. For a urethane ball, I was quite surprised how well it continued when I used it on the PBA Wolf Pattern. It read the midlane strong and hit the pins very hard. This ball will be great in any bowler's arsenal for light volumes of oil. Low rev players should not be afraid to drop the surface to 500 or 1000 abralon to help get a little more hook potential. Description: The Rebel Tank uses the same Halogen Core found in the Tribal line and the recent Tag, while the coverstock is the same DMX Pearl Urethane as found on the Artic Sniper. Reaction: The Rebel Tank allows me to play the proper part of the lane on very short and very low volume patterns. It is not too early as sometimes urethane can be and has good continuation, but keep in mind, it is urethane. I am not one that will pull out urethane in league or even on burnt patterns, for me this ball will see more use as I mentioned when the patterns are going to be shorter or have less volume. Urethane to me is for when they are difficult (with lots of frictions somewhere on the lane) and you are trying to make them a little easier by keeping the ball path much straighter. The Rebel Tanks box cover comes at 4000 Grit LSP, so you can always go to a lower grit to get this urethane ball to read even sooner or it also polishes very well for a urethane cover. Comparisons: The Rebel Tank is cleaner in the front part of the lane compared to the Original Tank, which also provides about 3 boards more overall hook. Comparing it to the Arctic Sniper since they both have the same cover (although polished), combined with a weaker core it provides about 3 boards less overall hook. So the Rebel Tank truly fits in between the Original Tank and the Artic Sniper, but I do see a little bit of the MOTIV continuation through the pins even for a urethane ball.
